768MB ram, can i turn off paging file?
is 768MB ram enough to turn off the paging file? i read someone's post that he had 1GB of ram and with his paging file off, the performance was much better.

Per Micorosoft, a workstation should be RAM+12. So your case is 524.
Now, this is where it gets odd. Each application you run is different in the requirement for paging. You should run your apps with the task manager running while looking at the Performance tab. Set the refresh speed to Low and then stretch the window as wide as your screen. Normally at Low update speed, you will get about 15 minutes of history in the graphs. Also watch the memory usage and commit rates.
Run your typical apps as you normally do. This will give you a very good idea of what is happening with your system, then adjust up or down as your system/apps require. Normally however you do not want to run with less page than actual RAM. Windows likes paging no matter how much RAM you have.
The 1 Gig RAM and no paging file seems impossible, as Windows (assuming running Windows) `requires' a page file. XP may be different, but according to M$, NT and 2000 will not run properly without a page file.
YMMV, but try it out each way, see what works best for your situation.
