Firewall or security for wi-fi web surfing

#1 Post by Outlaw » Fri Oct 28, 2005 2:08 pm

I have T23, running XP pro SP2, that I use for downloading mail and web surfing, I use Thunderbird for e-mail and Firefox for the web. I'm using AVG anti-virus, and run spybot and adware every other day. Do I need a fire-wall? I don't leave the computer stay on very long, only about 2 hours a day.

I am running similar to you and I have Norton Personal Firewall on WIN XP Pro, the Firewall claims to save me from attack about every third day. Did not seem to have this issue running Windowz 98SE.

Depends.

If your behind a NAT Router with a Firewall that has SPI (most do)... no.

If your plugged directly to the net. I would (the XP SP2 firewall may be enough).

Two months ago, I installed Zone Alarm on two of my computers. Since then, Zone Alarm has "protected" the WIN98SE machine about 200 times; the WIN2K machine, 1700 times (!)

My kid is running XP. How do I activate its firewall??

If you have SP2 go to control panel, windows firewall or security center and select on and OK. If you do not have SP2 zone alarm is great for XP and would be fine.
