Software Installer problem

#1 Post by defiant107 » Sun Nov 20, 2005 11:59 pm

I did a search and didn't find an answer to this problem, but recently I've been having trouble with Software Installer. Every time I try to connect to the server to find updates, I get the following message: "A connection with the server could not be established."

This is strange because it worked less than a week ago and I haven't made any major changes to my system. I checked IBM's website and it says that message is generated because of a firewall, but I have an exception for Software Installer, I tried disabling and like I said, I made no major changes. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Software Installer to no avail. I'm at my wit's end as to what to do and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Oh, my system specs are as follows:
Thinkpad T43p
Windows XP SP2
2GB RAM
2ghz Centrino
Type: 2668-RU3

Occasionally IBM's server is down, and Software Installer can't connect. This has happened to others in the past. If you give your location, others in your area may be able to confirm this.

I realize this. I'm on a campus network and I've witnessed others use Software Installer without encountering this error, which is why I posted. In either case, whatever was wrong spontaneously went away for one reason or another that I cannot figure out.

Cheers!

If software installer updated itself, then your firewall exception for the old .exe likely wouldn't be valid any longer, and a new one would have to be created for the new version of the .exe.

Since it's working on other systems within sight, that's about the only thing I can think of... Might be worth creating a new exception. pkmgr.exe is the launch file, as I recall...
