Free Beta Version Anti-Virus Software from Microsoft

#1 Post by christopher_wolf » Thu Dec 01, 2005 6:06 pm

Hello, I recently uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus because it was a resource hog and installed AVG...I am also trying this out; hopefully, it will be pretty useful to everybody. Here is the link

http://ideas.live.com/ Then click on "Sign-up" for the Live OneCare Beta

Try it out and give some feedback; there really need to be more free Antivirus software packages out there with free updates.

:)

In other news: There is another Trojan out that exploits an IE Vulnerability, Microsoft is expected to pull an out-of-cycle patch instead of waiting for the scheduled patch day. Heads up IE users. ;) :)

If that works as good as it says, it is going to put me out of business.
Judging from my experience with these types of products I am not going to start worrying yet. 8)

Nope. The beta version of Windows OneCare Live is free, though the final service will be a paid subscription.

Well, I just finished playing with it...Final Verdict:

It won't even put freeware out of business and NAV can safely laugh at it.

I installed it; booted up and was greeted with the most annoying thing ever...A near 2:00 minute boot up time that was repeatable; up from my 1:00 Cold Start boot up. Needless to say, I was not pleased at all...I endured all the way upto the desktop appearing. Then it informed me that it had decided, perhaps foolishly, to let IE access the internet and make me manually change the settings for other programs like Keiro and AVG. Also, it seemed to start a "Ghost" of the Windows Firewall *even though* I had disabled that system service. Some parts of it said the Firewall was on, some parts said it was off. It looked like the Windows Security Center on Steriods and moved through everything like a Hippo on Tranquilizers. It wasn't a particularly good experience. Even though the latest Norton install I had was really bloated, at least it did something useful. I was able to repeat this behavior on boot up several times. I guess I will be sticking with Keiro and AVG even more. 8)

Oh, and the it has a "Subsrciption Service" after the Beta period expires; something else I detest....Subscription Fees for services that run to protect my computer from malicious, but free, malware.

Let's hope it uninstalls cleanly.
