MobileMeter

#1 Post by Rob Mayercik » Mon Dec 12, 2005 9:05 am

Ok, I've seen a number of threads mention MobileMeter as an excellent system performance monitoring utility, and it sound very much like something that I might like to play with (I'm the sort of guy who likes having the task manager running on NT/XP at work, to see what I'm doing to the processor).

However, as near as I can tell, I can't use it on my TP. Why, do you ask? Simple - I don't run NT/2K/XP. 98SE is currently my OS of choice.

So I put it to the community - for those of you still using 98, what do you use that is an analog to MobileMeter? There are many out there (I have on occasion looked about on the various download sites), but I am interested in actual feedback from someone more real that the nebulous reviews I have read.

Thoughts?

Why are you using 98SE still? I hated that OS.

Win98SE was one of my favorites, until I started using XP Pro. It was very stable, and no blue screens of death.

I still use it quite often, especially on small hard drives.

Quattro: No offense, but I don't particularly care whether you hated 98SE or not. I happen to like it, and the fact that I had a copy from another machine (which also runs 98SE) meant I could rebuild my TP without additional cost, as I bought it secondhand with no OEM restore media. 98 does everything I need it to do at the moment, so why should I spend any money on a newer OS? I'm going to use 98 for as long as I can - as long as I can find SW that supports 98, I'm staying put. (Incidentally, that is why I will be buying the Nero package to support my new DVD burner - their latest software is compatible with 98, while Roxio is not.)

That being said, do you actually have a suggestion for me, or did you just post to gripe about 98? This is, after all, the "Windows" forum - to my mind, that means all Windows versions are welcome here, not just the latest and greatest.

tfflivemb2, since you still use 98SE, do you have a favorite Mobilmeter nalogue?

Unfortunately, I don't. I have been looking, but to e honest, I haven't looked very hard. Unlike a lot of users on here, I am not one that is trying to max things out. (ie. 7200rpm hard drive, overclocking, etc.) I just like to get things working properly and then pass them off.

I used Mobile Meter for the first time about 3 months ago, just to test it, as I was having a heat issue with a 600E. Since I was using Win98SE, I simply removed the hard drive, replaced it with another one and loaded XP. It turns out that the temps were ok, it just seemed hotter than the others that I was working on at the time.

I will do a quick search for you and post back.

Don't know what TP you have, but on my old HP OmniBook 800CT, Win2000 runs significantly slower than 98. Much more stable, but slower. So everyone's mileage may vary, and usually does.

Wish I had a tip for you about a -meter, but haven't run 98 in many moons (except on the rarely-booted desktop partition for my daughter).
