Issue installing R&R on T40...need some help

#1 Post by jongordo8 » Mon Dec 26, 2005 10:22 pm

I went to install R&R on my fresh install of XP using software installer, however I get this error message:

There is not enough free space in the boot sector to install the rescue and recovery boot manager.

What can I do to fix this and install R&R?

what version of R&R are you using? Try version 3, perhaps this solves your problem already.

If not: you have to erase the MBR (for a guide see http://ldp.rtin.bz/LDP/LG/issue63/okopnik.html). After that you can do a fresh XP installation or try to restore the original XP bootloader with booting into the XP recovery console of an original XP Retail CD (google search keywords: fixboot, fixmbr).

Well I was able to do a fresh install of WinXP, and am trying to load R&R version 3 onto my T40. Will deleting the MBR have any negative affect on my computer?

It sounds like you might not have the fat32 rescue partition (which is normally hidden). To check:
Kyocera wrote:. . . But just to check and see if you have it look in disk management in XP and is will show up there as a fat32 partition of 1.6G or whatever size yours turns out to be. It should be there, my t30 is certified used and it shipped with all the R&R. . .
I think you'd have to use some 3rd party software like Partition Magic to create one without losing your existing NTSF partition.

The following should work, but you will lose all existing data on the hard drive.

First of all, go into the BIOS setup menu and disable Security for the Predesktop Area.

Next, after booting up with the Windows install CD, delete all partitions. Then create a Primary partition. Finally format the partition using NTFS file system (from the Windows install CD). Now you can install windows.

If you do as Gomjabber says your going to lose your recovery partition (if you have one) it sounds like you have already installed XP so why do it again.

I think you should try an earlier version of R&R as mentioned already.
You need the MBR as it contains the pre desktop OS (r&r environment). This is what you boot into when pushing the F11 key. There are also some r&r functions under windows but apparently are totally separate.

Check out these lenovo links, this manual explains in painful details the functioning of the pre os environment page 27 has an excellent graphic:
