ipconfig flat out doens't work

#1 Post by ryan » Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:01 pm

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code.

C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan>
update:
I still have the problem, but here's some information I left out:

Smile Wow lots of replies! Thanks!

-I haven't had any surges to my knowledge.

-All network devices are fully functional, it's just ipconfig that doesn't work.
ipconfig /all gives the same output as ipconfig does for me (error).

-I'm running WinXP on a T42 notebook.

-ipconfig does not work when running windows under safe mode with networking

-No red x's in device manager for network adapters.

Try this> ping 127.0.0.1

also >ipconfig /all You should get 4 replies.

Run PC Dr. for DOS.

Did you get hit by lightning i.e. surge/spikes either through ethernet/phone, or some other abnormality?

Some problem with your OS. I look at tons of machines (clients). IPCONFIG has never failed. ... JD Hurst

In pure networking terms I have seen this when a computer gets zapped through the nic or modem.

Check device manager for those pesky red X's too.

try

ipconfig /all

This should show you more specific info about the problem and the adapter / IP status. This seems to me to be a problem with drivers specifically TCP/IP on your adapter. ipconfig/all might tell you more if the network internet protocal installation ( drivers since this is software based ) is OK. A caveat, ipconfig works only with WinXP, Win 2K and Win98 have different syntax which I do not remember off the top of my head. To see what you should try, type ipconfig /? to see the options available.

Boot in safe mode and do "ipconfig /all" in a CMD window. Oops, you did.

Windows 2000? Hit F8 and select safe mode with networking. Oops, you did.

Run DEVMGMT.MSC, too (I *think* that works in 2000; if not, run SYSDM.CPL, and find the hardware device manager). See if your network devices have that nasty red exclamation point on 'em. Oops, you did.

Remove the network device(s) and add it/them again. Drivers should already be in your system.

Prayer (depending on your faith).

Boot into safe mode and do an IPconfig /all from there too, see if there is any red exclamation points in the device manager for your network adapters, remove and reinstall them, you should already have the adapters installed on your system, run DEVMGMT.MSC. Run SFC/SCANNOW from the run box. Hit F8.

Pray or sing.

If you read the posts you will see that a lot of information was already covered. That was the point.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Ryan drives the covered wagon ... how's the IPCONFIG issue coming?

The point I was trying to make was that a lot of your post(s) have information already given. By basically re-writing your post I was trying to make that point, I was not nor would I copy or post something that had been posted two or three times. Maybe add some new information and try not to be so know-it-allish, makes for boring reading.

Really? "Know-it-allish?" I had no idea. I guess that's what I get for shooting from the hip without carefully cataloging everything in a thread. Only tried to help. Pardon me for bothering.

"Boring reading?" If you're bored with my posts, don't read them. Optional: lighten up. Problem solved. Have a nice weekend.
