What to put back after fresh install.

#1 Post by Dave S » Wed Jan 11, 2006 3:10 pm

I just got a Z60T and I'm using the guide at 4saad.com to do a fresh Windows install. My question is, which of the drivers and programs should I put back on the computer? Obviously, if I put them all back I might as well stick with the factory preload. Any programs or drivers people find especially useful or necessary? Conversely, any you find to be problematic; reducing performance, causing conflicts etc. And I don't need extra programs for things that can easily be done in Windows. I'm using the laptop for music production so I want it as clean as possible, but I will be using some of the nice IBM stuff like the hard drive protection system. So, what can you live without, and what can't you live without?

Well; here is a list of the things that I would make sure you have

***RECOMMENDED***
1.) Rescue & Recovery
2.) Power Manager
2.) Active Protection System
3.) ThinkVantage Software Installer

***OPTIONAL***
4.) Thinkpad Configuration
5.) Presentation Director
6.) Client Security Solution
7.) Whatever else you can find

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Concerning Rescue and Recovery

Can I use R&R without having it create the hidden partition? I want to use it to backup to an external hard drive.

Hopefully you have made a set of factory recovery cds.
Yhen you can try different setups without worry. You can start bare and add as you need. Configurator is a good one to use until you get used to your tp.
RR lets you backup to network drive, optical, usb ext, extra int hdrive. I believe it creates the hidden partition on he external if you choose it, but remember it is a huge orog itself. You may just want to drag and drop to backup data.
i like a clean system too, but keep in mind with thinkpads crashes and conflicts are not as common as other brands. With 3 units I have never had a bsod ever.
