Client Security Solution 6. I think i've majorly screwed up

#1 Post by serv » Thu Jan 12, 2006 1:41 am

Hi.

Let me first just thank you all for a great forum. I haven't posted here before, but i do stop by once in a while because this place is a wealth of knowledge. However, i think i might have pooped myself and i can't seem to find anyone else on this forum who's had a similar issue. I guess i must be stupider than most people...

My story is long and complicated so i'll cut it right to the chase.

I have a 4 gigabyte Securedrive.vol image file containing My Documents and all of my Outlook email archives. I do have the password to open it, but CSS6 and RnR3 refuses to install. Is there any way i can extract the contents?

Now here's what happened. I had CSS6 installed only. I made a ~5 gig partition called W:\ and used CSS6 to make a 4 gig Securedrive image file on said partition. I mounted this image file as R:\, and moved the My Documents path and my outlook email archive folders to this drive. Now this all was nice and peachy for a while, until i decided to install RnR3.

RnR3 apparently doesn't like me (it's a long story) or my T42, so after 3 hours of struggling i gave up and uninstalled it. Of course this also uninstalled CSS6, which at the time i didn't think would be a problem. I chose to keep my CSS6 settings, while i now realize maybe i shouldn't have...

So when i try to install CSS6 now, i get a "Error 1327.Invalid drive R:\" message. Of course it's invalid, i need CSS6 to mount it... So i try and install RnR3, and get the same error... Which i guess is obvious since it's the same software. So i remap W:\ to R:\ in a faint hope that any drive will do, only to have CSS and RnR tell me that i can only install the software on a ThinkCentre or a ThinkPad.

1 hour in regedit trying to find where CSS6 find references to R:\ and 6 unsuccessfull tries with Windows System Restore later, i'm writing myself an email to Lenovo support. Of course i'm also in school at the moment and i use my computer every day taking notes, so it would be nice if i got it fixed as soon as possible... Right now it's 12.33 AM, and i have to get up at 6 AM... Yay for that one!

Right now i'm thinking i'm going to have to re-install IBM Rapid Restore Ultra 4 (which i cant find available for download anywhere by the way), take a backup of my current screwed setup, clean the computer back to factory settings, install CSS6 and open the drive image, copy that all over to my external harddrive, reinstall my backup with my screwed setup, copy my documents back onto that setup, and forget that CSS6 exists and never try and install it again. Which i must say would be a [censored] pitty...

Anyway, if anyone has a good idea of something to try, please let me know. If not, go ahead and tell me i'm stupid. I know i am doing that right now...
I wish I could get the power of my T410 combined with the chassis, screen and keyboard of my T42.

I just wanted to inform that I managed to get it all back, in case someone was pondering on a solution. I tried system restore again (for the seventh time), this time in safe mode and with my external harddrive connected (that was just a coincident actually). Now i don't know which of the two that made a difference, but my system is now back to it's state before Rescue and Recovery was installed.

If i ever find the guy (or girl) who came up with Windows System Restore, i'm going to give him (or her) a big freaking hug. This is the second time it has saved my system from death and horror.

Yay! :D

Another solution would have been just downloading Safeguard Private Disk from the Utimaco web site. It is exact the same software IBM/Lenovo has tied in CSS 6.
