Hotkeys Utilities Not Working

#1 Post by Dana » Sat Jan 14, 2006 1:13 pm

Is there some secret sauce involved in getting the Hotkey utilities working?
I have an A22M (2628-ttu). Last night I installed the latest software installer and updated everything avilable. Running Windows 2000 Pro.

There is a folder, \Lenovo\pkgmgr\hotkeys\ with executable and such in there. But none of the .exe's will run and I can find no overaching management utility. It really looks as if the hotkey utilities have not been installed and I can find no way to accomplish this.

Anyone know what is going on?

Thanks... Dana

If your problem is the various Fn key combinations aren't working, check task manager to see if TPHKMGR.EXE is running. If it is, something odd is going on.

If it's not running go back to the hotkey folder, click the TPHKMGR icon and try the Fn combinations. If they work, you'll just have to make sure TPHKMGR is loaded at start up.

Check the readme file for Hotkeys on the A22M, and verify that they work with Windows 2000. I had a 600E where the Hotkeys only worked with Windows 98. The readme file can be found on the driver matrix page for the A22M. Sometimes a BIOS update is needed. Check the readme file for the BIOS update as well.

THHKMGR is running in the process list... but I do not see any way to activate hotkeys. I uninstalled and reinstalled the package which says it is good for W2K and the A22M. Is there an actual manager that can be opened to acitvate hotkeys? There is nothing in the TP Configuration utility that deals with hotkeys. The readme was not useful at all. Either I'm being incredbily dumb or there is something missing.

Not that I'm aware of.

It sounds like something happened to the update. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the new hotkey package. You may also (if you've still got it) revert to the previous version if it was working.

Reinstalling regained function. It turns out there is not much in the hotkey package that is of use to me at this time. I know there were some prerequistes for some of the packages and I wonder if the hotkey utility fell prey to that. I used the software installer to download and install something like 8 updates at one time. Think all is okay now.

Nice to hear you got it taken care of.

I'm less thrilled with Software Installer than others seem to be. It's nice that it finds updates for you, but I don't like automatic installing of anything. I usually make a list and go to the device driver matrix, download what I want and install them at my leisure.

That way I know what's been installed, in what order, and where the files are on my drive if I need them again.

In theory you can download updates from the Matrix, then point the software installer to the files locally. That is what I tried to do... and it did not work. I had to download all of them again with software installer. 45 Mb over a dial-up connection... was not a happy camper.

I can understand your frustration.

I was less than 100% clear about software installer. I don't use it to install the updated packages. I just use it to find available updates. I download and use the manual install procedure. Also, I rarely install updates described as "recommended". About the only time I install "recommended" updates is when I'm having a problem with the currently installed version.

More than theory. It works! The key is to download the file from the matrix page then double-click on it to execute it. All that is done is the files are extracted to an appropriate subdirectory in C:\DRIVERS\. Now when you run Software Installer, it finds the files in the C:\DRIVERS\subdirectory and installs the driver or software. When I do this I tell Software Installer not to search online for updates.
