I have the t42 mentioned in the sig. For about 6 months i've deleted the preload state and been running linux. Which has worked beautifully for all of those 6 months. Everything including ACPI worked flawlessly.
However, i brought a nice little windows XP pro (with sp1, later installed sp2 manually) cd from india and thought i'd give windows a try. But, I couldnt get Sleep / Standby to work, the option wasnt even MENTIONED in the Power Options menu, nor could i get it to work with ALL the IBM drivers installed. Stand by works when i close the lid when in BIOS menu.
Told the rep that i couldnt get the screen to shut off with fn+f3 and couldnt get Sleep / Standby to work with Fn+f4. Guy with southern accent put me on hold for about half an hour before he was able to say, "we dont support the retail version and you need to contact microsoft." I asked what makes the preload image so special, and he said that its tweaked with IBM drivers that are publicly available, which i downloaded and installed. I even tried using the drivers that i had backed up in the "ibmtools" folder. Those didnt work.
Windows n00b, asking for some help guys. Linux ACPI is so much easier i'm sad to say. I really need this or having a thinkpad laptop really isnt worth it
