Windows XP Login screen gone

#1 Post by schen » Tue Jan 24, 2006 12:41 pm

I've recently run into a strange issue that I think is caused by an old piece of quasi-IBM software. I have a T23 with an UltraPort Camera and finally got around to loading the drivers/software a month or so ago after a clean XP load this summer. Unfortunately, after the "FaceIt" software loaded, my login screen went away and was replaced by the old W2K/NT screen that you just have to know the user name and fill in the password. The icons for the various user profiles is gone. I've removed the program as well as cleaned the registry of any reference to it to no avail. Do anyone have any ideas short of another complete reload?

Go to "Control Panel-->User Accounts-->Change the way users log on or off" and make sure "Use the welcome screen" is selected.

Unfortunately that's the first thing I tried and the "Use the welcome screen" radio button is grayed out.

Try this ( from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm ):
Control Panel/Users/Change the Way Users Logon/Welcome Screen or... Start/Run/Regedit Key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Value Name: LogonType Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value Data: (0 = Classic Mode, 1 = Welcome Screen) Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'LogonType' and edit the value according to the settings below. Reboot.

Thanks. I'll give it a try when I get home. I'm actually working on that some TP right now, but it has another HDD in it with a "work" (w/Novell) image loaded so I can log on here at school (teach 7th grade Texas History). When I put my home HDD back in tonight I try your fix and let you know the result. I worked in IT for some years, but I was mostly a management/hardware guy.

Missing Logon

#6 Post by schen » Wed Jan 25, 2006 1:04 pm

Unfortunately the LogonType registry edit didn't work. The registry value was already at "1" which is show Logon options vs. "Classic Logon" so it should show the regular XP screen, but it doesn't. According to XP, I have a bad dll file called "FSSGINA.dll" that's causing the problem but I can't find it in the registry. I have found the file in Windows NT, but the machine doesn't boot if I remove it. Any other thoughts?

Now this sounds like the problem described (with possible solution) here:

Does that mean the windowsxp.mvps.org tip worked?

Also, you're welcome.

That's exactly what I meant, sorry I wasn't more clear. It was just a minor thing that was a nagging issue.
