BSOD on HD swap between Thinkpads

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Thu Feb 02, 2006 6:41 pm

I posted this to the Tx forum a while ago, but got no response, so I'm gonna try here....

I'm curious about something....

I have a dual boot system that doesn't use a 3rd party boot manager. It was set up like this: HD formatted to 3 partitions, Win98 installed on C: (primary partition), then Win XP set up on D:, data resides on E. So it's your typical Windows-only dual boot setup.

I took the HD out of the T22 where it was when the OSs etc were installed, and popped it into a T23. It would boot fine into Win98, but if I tried to boot into XP it would BSOD right away, saying windows shut down to prevent damage to the computer, etc. A repair install of XP fixed the problem, and all seems to work normally.

The thing I'm curious about was why 98 would boot but XP would BSOD (I would have expected Win98 to be more crash-prone if there was some incompatible system-board device driver loaded). (I should note that I didn't do things like unistall the IDE etc drivers before moving the drive over)

Comments or ideas?
