My understanding is that to take FULL advantage of all the Vista options, a 128MB video card is requiered. There are many conflicting stories out there, we should know this summer!!
Here is a nice article:

I had the opportunity of seeing the Beta 5270 versoin "in action" on a T42. There's a lot to say about it, but I try to cut it short. This version is far from being ready for a Public Preview Program, so there are reasons why MS doesn't offer such a program as of yet. But, besides of all the bugs and glitches it installed in less than an hour and booted up almost as fast as XP on the same machine. As for your question: Aero Glass, Flip3D and the live preview in a tiny window of what is minimized to the taskbar ran perfectly smooth with the driver from ATi (new for this Beta).
OTOH, there are rumors that the GUI isn't ready yet. I have no idea what the final vesion will look like and what the hardware requirements will be. Usually the performance in a final version is supposed to improve a lot, so, if the GUI will at least perform as good as it does right now, a radeon 9600 will (ok, I better should say "should") run it perfectly smooth.
That's even more interesting as I've read that resolutions higher than XGA (1024x768) would require 128 MB of VRAM. If this is true for this Beta than it apparently means that IN ALL there has to be 128 of RAM available for the graphics card, since the afore mentioned T42 had a SXGA+ screen and was running Vista in that resolution.
Anyway, we have to wait for the public version to be able to say more on this.
