Rescue & Recovery Restoring Factory Setting Problem.....

#1 Post by meCka » Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:52 pm

Hey guys, I just got my ThinkPad T40 a couple of dayz ago. It came with a 40GB HD and I upgraded it onto a 80GB...Im trying to set a clean install as a like it came from the factory so im using the recovery cd. After I run R&R3 I go to Restore system to factory systems. It asks me all about me saving data, files and all that crap. I get a pop up labeled as the predesktop installer copying files to X:\i386, Preboot ect....so far all the copying has gone good but at the end when it finished i get a message telling me "There was an error during the initialazion".. Ive have tried this for hours and I still havent figured out what the problem is... you guys think it might be due to bad recvoery cds?...

Your post is confusing because AFAIK, the T40 did not come with Rescue and Recovery 3. If you are using the Recovery Disc set or Product Recovery Disc set (about six CD's) that you can burn one time when you get your ThinkPad, you should not be seeing Rescue and Recovery 3 - it would be an earlier version.

If you are trying to restore to the Factory state from within Rescue and Recovery, by booting up from the Recovery Media CD (one CD), then that would be different. Check in the BIOS. Is security set to Normal for the Predesktop Area, or do you even have this setting?

You might have to flash the hard drive with the latest firmware for this to work. There is a recent thread in the T4x series forum on how to do this. You also may have to upgrade the BIOS and embedded controller first.

That is what I get when I firs boot up the cd, a screen that says Rescue & Recovery 3.I bought this laptop in ebay so it came with it as a burned copy in 1 CD & 1 DVD. I probably think the cds are not burned right and are messed up. I have been requesting for a copy myself because my friend wont let me barrow his since he wants them back.... Its his laptop btw...

I check the BIOS on that and it does come with it. The security setting was set to normal but after playing around with it I disabled it and still no luck on getting back the T40 up and running....

To tell if it's a drive issue you could put your old drive back in and see if you can run the recovery discs on that. If you're not willing to format that yet you could put the old drive back in and create a new boot CD from within the Windwos and then swap drives again to see if it still fails.

Too bad I never thought about that. The 40GB the T40 came with was sold :(

Ay of you guys have the recvoery CD set for the T40 that are willing to provide me a copy? I will pay threw Paypal if payment is necessary to get the CD set. Ive tried calling IBm but since the laptop is not on warranty anymore, they wont sell me the set :?
