Help with transferring from one hard drive to another

#1 Post by NJRonbo » Thu Mar 30, 2006 4:41 am

Here's my situation....

My T60 is about to arrive any day now with a 100GB SATA
5400 hard drive.

However, after I ordered the T60 as an afterthought, I ordered
a 100GB SATA 7200 hard drive to replace it as the 5400 is too slow.

Here's the problem....

The 7200 hard drive is on back order for 4 weeks. I want to
start using my T60 immediately.

So....

I figured I'd load my 5400 hard drive system up with all the
software and stuff I want on it. When the 7200 hard drive comes
in, I'll replace the drive and transfer from one drive to another.

Here's how I plan to do it (and this is where I need your help)

I am going to use software such as ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE or
GENIE PC BACKUP to create an IMAGE of the 5200 hard drive.
I have an external Maxtor One Touch drive for my desktop that
I can store that image on.

As soon as I replace the 5200 with the 7200 hard drive I plan
to use the LENOVO RECOVERY DISC to load windows and the
basic drivers. Then I'll load the TRUE IMAGE or GENIE PC BACKUP
software and RESTORE the image that I made to my Maxtor drive.

Will this work? Can I expect all the information I took off
of the 5200 drive to work as well on the 7200 drive?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, should work.

Another alternative without extra software:

1. Create with R&R a recovery CD and data DVD.
2. Install all software
3. Use R&R to make an image
4. Copy that image to the external hdd
then later
5. install the new hdd
6. Run the recovery CD and DVD to make sure that also the service partition will be created
7. Recover your image from the external hdd.

Or use a cloning software like EZ-GIG or HDClone which copies the hdd 1:1.

Zeitgeist,

Thanks so much for the help.

Could you further explain this...
1. Create with R&R a recovery CD and data DVD.
What is R&R?

Zeit (or anyone),

Also...

In addition to answering the above question...

I take it that it won't matter that I am moving an
IMAGE of a 5400 hard drive to a 7200 hard drive?

Does the IMAGE contain any information about the
5400 hard drive that may hamper performance of the 7200?

Thanks!

R&R = Rescue and Recovery

It won't matter which drive you are putting it on, even if you went with an older slower drive. It doesn't take the information about the drive itself.

I haven't used it myself, because I prefer fresh installs every time. Since I have a legit version of XP, I don't even bother with R&R.

I take it that the Lenovo T60 ships with a R&R CD?

Also, if I understand the above instructions correctly...

From this you are suggesting that the first thing
I do before installing any software is use this R&R
CD to make a RECOVERY CD and DATA DVD?

I take it that the R&R CD walks me through both processes
quite easily?

I can also use this same R&R CD to make an image of the
hard drive after I installed all the software I need before
the transfer?

Forgive me for asking twice, but I am merely
just double-checking everything to make sure I am
doing this right.

Thanks, guys, for all the help you have provided.

R&R comes already installed on your system.

Try looking through this and watch the video as well:

Here's an interesting point someone brought up
about transferring from one HD to another that
I was hoping you guys could clarify...
You may find when you've restored the image to the new drive that XP won't boot because it doesn't recognise the hard drive's hardware identifier. True Image may take care of this but I know Ghost does not. You may need to familiarise yourself with Microsoft Sysprep utility which is designed for exactly this kind of situation.
What are the possibilities of this happening?

To add to the above,

Someone is telling me that I should use Windows XP
SYSPREP in order to transfer over the needed hard
drive schematics.

Is this necessary? Can't I just use Acronis True Image
to transfer from a 5200 100GB -> 7200 100GB drive?
