Shell Replacement Question

#1 Post by revolutionary_one » Fri Mar 31, 2006 2:29 am

Quick post. Just having some problems finding a decent shell replacement for my Preload windows install on my t42. Tried bb4win, bblean, Litestep and they all seem to make rundll32 crash and make synaptics go bonkers. Maybe its just MY thinkpad with windows, it seems to have all the problems associated with windows, Linux works without a flaw.

Is there a special hack i have to use. I've been meaning to try some of the more viable stuff posted on neowin.net but I havent gotten around to it.

Any advice is appreciated.

I'm not specifically asking for recommendation on WHAT shell replacements I should use.

More so help in troubleshooting the kinds of problems I'm currently having with the rundll32 error. And why BOTH bblean and litestep have the SAME problem(s) (reproduceable) with both rundll32, synaptics, and a host of other things.

I believe i'm seeing people post pictures of the uxtheme that they run on their thinkpads. Gonna try that tonight.

I've heard LiteStep is more stable these days, but I dunno.. last time I tried, I got all sorts of problems too. Not quite polished yet.

My personal opinion is to stick with explorer on windows heh.. less hassle that way.

My experience with freeware shells FWIW:

after tiring of their inability to work seamlessly i remove them, this has corrupted windows - even a system restore would not fix, after a couple of times I now accept what is with the OS.

Just my 2. Keep it movin folks. This is a board of great knowledge, and helpful people, leave a post here long enough and you should get the help you need. Logging out to chill the brewskis now it is :)Saturday

Heh. I do agree, chris is one of the top ten most helpful people on this board. That reminds me I need to PM him when I get my bluetooth dongle so he can teach me how to use my cell phone to gateway my thinkpad through to my Dialup ISP :)

I spend most of my time in front of the computer with Linux and all the keyboard shortcuts/conventions I have setup make my life a 100x easier than with explorer.exe. Too bad though, most of these shell replacements give me tons of trouble with the preload, but not usually with the default XP install.

I'll continue looking :)

I've done it. If you follow some of the steps and advice in teh "bluetooth audio gateway" (something like that) thread, you can get it. I did it one day from one of those "for pay 'free Internet'" cafes, and cackled so loud the kitchen staff called 911 for Prince Charming.
