TP-600X WINXP or WIN2Kpro
Which OS is better for this machine (p-III 650, ram 576mb)?
The rest of the house is networked and runs WIN2Kpro but, my son needs
(I guess) to run WINXP for school apps.
Any recommendations or drawbacks.
Thanks.

Re: TP-600X WINXP or WIN2Kpro
There's nothing I'm aware of that will run under XP that won't under W2K on a 600X.PCSAR 4x4 652 wrote:Which OS is better for this machine (p-III 650, ram 576mb)?

FWIW and IMHO W2K is the sweet spot for a 600X and is the best supported OS by IBM among the newer offerings for the 600 series machines.
All that being said, I'll admit that one of my 4 600Xs is happily running XP Pro.

OK... well, he needs to run Visio, office 2002 frontpage 2002, etc. those will run properly under win2kpro w/ svc pk 4 ??
I have another couple questions....
Under WIN2kpro, is it neccessary to install the thinkpad congfiguration program or will w2kpro controll the docking station and assign IRQ' and such itself. If it is a neccessary item, is it also neccessary for WIN XP pro?
Thankyou for your time.

SW on WinXP vs Win2k
I have run across some problems with various CBT (Computer Based Training) programs that won't run on NT/2000 but will on XP Pro. Also, if your son's school is "requiring" XP, then you should go with XP... that way they may be able to provide a little more support.
I have XP Pro on a 770ed with no problems... both stock P2-266 and upgraded P2-400. The 600x P3-650 should be able to handle it much better. I would recommend going into the System Properties -> Advanced tab -> Performance Settings button -> select "Adjust for Best Performance" if that's a concern. This will improve performance on slower machines considerably by eliminating most of XP's eye candy.
If the price of XP is an issue, try searchin for XP Pro OEM software rather than the full version or an upgrade. I have seen it as low as about $90 without CD and $125 with CD.
