Networking problem

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Thu Apr 13, 2006 9:48 pm

I have a home network consisting of a router, 2 wired desktops, and my T23 which connects wirelessly. The downstairs wired box is running Windows Media Center 2005, the upstairs box and the T23 are running XP Pro. The network is not set up to use a domain, simple file sharing is turned off on all the computers, and appropriate permissions are set (Administrators and the computer username) All computers use the same username and password.

I pulled my old 560X out to set up so my wife could do some wordprocessing, and loaded Win98se on it, use the same username and password as the other computers. However, I can't connect to the downstairs box with it. I CAN connect to the upstairs box no problem, (just navigate through Network Neighborhood to whatever folder on whatever drive I want to be in), but if I try to connect to the downstairs box, an Enter Network Password dialog box pops up, which says

Resource: \\DOWNSTAIRS\IPC$

and underneath that has a Password: box (DOWNSTAIRS) is the network name of the downstairs box.)

If I type in the password that's being used on all the computers, I get an error message "The password is incorrect. Try again."

The thing that's driving me crazy is that on a previous install, I could connect with no problem, and I can't see anything that's changed.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried changing the password, rebooting.

Windows 98 uses disk sharing whereas Windows NT systems use file sharing. You need to go into the properties of the Windows 98 disk (in My Computer) and share the disk as C with a full password. When you map to it, do not use C$. ... JD Hurst

Thanks, JD, but did that. I can access the 560X from the desktop fine, it's just going the other way where I get the problem. I've created shares for all drives on all systems (e.g. Dowstairs Apps) and set full access permissions for Administrator, Admininstrators, and the network Username.

You can map from Windows 98 to Windows XP - I just ran my W98 machine and successfully mapped that way. You need to log on to the W98 machine with the same userid and password as the XP machine. Then make sure the firewall on the XP machine allows the W98 client machine. Finally, just to belt and suspender, the credentials on the W98 disk are not the same as the credentials from logging on with a userid and password. It is those credentials which must match XP.

That's ok, firewall is set to let anything on the network in (based on the IP address)

That I haven't done, will try when I get home from work. But...that wasn't done when I was connecting successfully before, so not sure it will do the trick.

Thanks again for your help, I'll post back.

This might be because Windows XP Pro (not sure about home) attaches the machine name to user names while Win98 does not.

"Resource: \\DOWNSTAIRS\IPC$ " is the Windows intermachine process communications share. Windows is telling you that it does not have permission to talk to the machine downstairs.

So, you might have to qualify the user name that you send to the Windows XP machine to be able to access the files.

So, to use the folder you need (which you should not be doing since the IPC$ share is for sys admin functions and not for regular sharing, you would connect like so

net use k: \\downstairs\c$

when prompted for a user name type

"downstairs\Administrator" or "downstairs\YOUR_USER_NAME_HERE"

and then enter your password.

Just entering "Administrator" resolves to the username "Upstairs\Adminstrator" on the Win XP box which is not a valid account.

If I understand the original post, the 560X will connect to the "upstairs box" running XP Pro, but won't connect to the "downstairs box" running Media Center 2005.

If that's the case, it would appear the problem isn't with the 560X but with a setting on the "downstairs box" that is different than the settings on the "upstairs box". You might want to compare the various security settings and look for a difference between the downstairs and upstairs boxes.
