Windows XP taskbar

#1 Post by jonathanlee » Sun Aug 01, 2004 3:31 pm

This may be a stupid question, but I tried setting up my quick launch on my toolbar. But when I log off windows and restart it the quick launch setting isn't located on my toolbar anymore. Is there anyway to keep it on permanently?

Any help and comments will be appreciated.

Thanks!

It supposed to stay there, but it's a windows bug. Read this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ick+launch Might work.

I tried everything, didn't work :( I guess I have to live without the quicklaunch taskbar.

Thanks though!

It was I who started the 'other' thread, and I find it more and more amusing as time goes by. Why? Well, the task bar comes and goes as it wants - there's no fixed interval. I can logon and find it there a dozen times, then off it goes the next time I logon. I think it's possibly down to the fact I talk to my laptop (age does this) and sometimes I might swear a bit and it takes umbrage...this said if anyone does eventually find out why, I'd be keen to know.

I use quick launch and do not have any problems. However I have only one user account, do not have login screen (system boots strait to my account) and I never logoff. At home my system is usually on standby, at work it is on, when traveling it is in hibernation. I do restart/shutdown sometimes but quick launch is always in place. So try avoiding logoff unless you must.

P.S. My GUI is also a bit tweaked with WinXP power toys + some default services are disabled

In the Display Properties (right click on the desktop), under the Desktop tab is Customize Desktop. In there is a setting to clean up the desktop after an interval. Is that checked? And if you uncheck it, what happens?

I follow these steps when setting up a PC or a User profile:
1. Right click on the Taskbar; uncheck Hide Inactive Icons; check Show Quick Launch; uncheck Auto Hide; check Grouping and check On top.
2. In the Start Menu tab, I also use Classic settings, and I uncheck Personalized Menus.
3. Right click on the Desktop; select Properties; select Desktop tab; click on Customize, and uncheck Clean up the desktop.
4. Right click on My Computer; select Properties; select Advanced tab; click on Performance Setttings. Uncheck much of the eye candy. There are settings in there that may affect icons, but these settings are mostly just personal preference.

Hope this helps. ... JDHurst
