intermittent wifi

#1 Post by dsigma6 » Mon May 22, 2006 4:29 pm

my internal wifi has been working fine until today- out of nowhere i get the icon with the X through it- then i hit fn f5 and it says OFF, even though i never turned it off.

when it loses connection, does it turn itself off in that setting, or is it messing with my head?

i reset my router, which works fine and has never caused my 600e to lose wireless signal within the ten feet im currently at.

it seems to be working 5 minutes, then will start working a minute or two after that.

my biggest problem with my 600e was the occasional BSOD. had this [censored] R40 for a week and is already making my hair fall out.

Are you running Access Connections 4.x ? It could be the automatic radio management thing if it is.

Fix for that is just to turn off the automatic radio management.

i dont even know if thats running- never seen that name anywhere on my screen, unless its running in the background.

ill give a look later on. thanks for the advice.

edit: oh wait- i just looked and access connections is what im using when i hit FN F5? if so, then im definitely using it. i disabled the cisco crap program that came with the wireless card because it was making my system crawl like it had 8mb of memory and a 150MB HD.

What Cisco card are you running? Is it a Aironet 350? CB20? Or CB21 a/b/g? I have PC card versions of the 350 and CB21AG.

If the Cisco ACU / ADU applications are conflicting with Access Connections, you can uninstall them, then reinstall and ensure you select the "manage connections with another program" setting. Otherwise you'll see something like you describe. Both AC and the Cisco software are trying to control the card and make connections to available networks.

The sweet spot for me is letting AC make the connections, but using AC 3.82, not buggy-as-hell 4.x. For authentication, AC uses Windows to manage authentication, and in there the Cisco software provided the WPA TKIP/AES capability. Reply here in this thread if you need more help or some screen shots.

it is a cisco AIR-MP20B (same as MPI350) 802.11b.

things were working fine for some reason for a week, but last night it stopped finding my network and picking up a stupid neighbors with no security on it at 1-5% signal.

i did enable WEP, which i think is why my signal isnt being picked up, because i had selected something like "network key is automatically provided for me."

it was working like this for a bit, so i wonder why it stopped. i think if i go into my router settings, and set the password again (to something i wont forget like i did this time), and then apply the password directly in windows wireless settings, things should work.

thanks for your help!

You might want to ensure the Cisco ADU (if installed) is not set to manage connections. Check the Select Profile button, I think.

Good deal!

AC control of the Cisco cards on my system was a little flakey but got ironed out with fiddling within AC.
