Win 98SE Question

#1 Post by BruisedQuasar » Sat May 27, 2006 9:55 am

I mailed a Lexar USB Pen Drive (256MB) to a friend of mine whose systems are all Windows 98SE. When he plugged in the Lexar, Windows wanted a driver, reporting it could not find one.

Anyone know what he needs to do? Can he work around this driver thing, or does he need to do something so he can use USB flash ram devices?

The jump drives are not plug and play in Win98. Tell your friend that he/she can get the drivers here.

Thank you for the help. My friend was excited about getting the Lexar, found it a downer when it would not run on Win '98

That's just the way it is with Win98.

There are no upgrades for Windows 98 USB. If a device works, you have been lucky. If not, there isn't a lot that can be done. Windows 98 is well and truly past it. Dump it if you can. ... JD Hurst

In this case, the drive should work. I think that the OP was saying that the friend was upset when he/she first rec'd the drive and it wasn't plug and play.

[snicker, snicker] Well, the short answer is snort-chortle at your friend and say "It's time to pony up and buy XP Home for your systems, DUDE." I still have my 98SE disc, it was the sweet spot in the Win9x world (95 was buggy, ME was even worse, 98SE with all downloads was 95% ME anyway). Great for systems that couldn't hack Win2000, or for playing legacy games that won't run in 2000.

But it's 2006, okay? XP Home will give your friend all the plug 'n play USB joy he can handle.

Tell him to go to the Lexar site and download the drivers for it.
