Quite correct (although I did manage to save a password into the password manager with IE, but then I far-prefer Firefox.)xcoll2001 wrote:Zeitgeist: I don't think the majority is having problems with the fingerprint reading in CSS 7.

My private disks use certificates and local ones work fine
Everything works about 90% for me. My private disks were all set up with certificates, so passwords were never involved. The only things that I can't get working OK are -
1. sometimes it takes multiple swipes of a fingerprint to get into my locked (Fn/F2) notebook. I no longer get the XP logon screen, not any indication of when a fingerprint works (no big green tick)
2. I simply cannot get a network drive of any reasonable size to work OK - it seems to but all the files are corrupt when I try and open them. I also get delayed write failure messages from Windows.
I'm still working on the above.
The version of PrivateDisk included in CSS7 is many releases beyond the version in CSS6. I had hoped this would fix the network drive but not yet.
I have a 20GB encrypted private disk on my C:\ drives which holds all my work data and e-mail. It works without any problems at all.

Password Manager works for me with IE
I have had no problems with PM and IE6 - in fact, I love it, it's so easy.

Nick Y: I have a question - did you the Type and Transfer tool to save passwords from IE since that's the only way I can do it. Also did it recall the passwords when you try to relog-on to the site. I've managed to save it but that's about it. Pressing CNTRL F2 does fill the fields with the save information.
Tony's X60s : ah so meaning that for you mounting the secureDisk are not managed at all by the Password manager. I suppose then my issues didn't apply to you. I discovered than the magnetic scanner are sensitive to its environment. If i have a dial-up modem plugged in, the reader will not work. At home when the power brick shares the same outlet with my wifi it also does not work. Unplug everything and lock your TP and see if if the scanner works.
In addition to CSS 7 when i opened the Password Manager i noticed that entries for my privateDisk were pointing to C:/explorer.exe rather the .vol file which it should be. This is also true for any web entries, it points to the .exe rather than the exact url or address, a reminiscent of CSS6 with Firefox.
Also I could only change the path in the main list window not in the Properties windows. Then after changing to the right path does the entry display a correct PrivateDisk red icon. Unfortunately it still does not automaticcaly fills in the field for me. Neither does CTRL F2 works.
Can anyone verify the above?
Thanks.

Tony's X60s: sorry to bug you again. is it possible if you could just do a simple test by creating a temporary PrivateDisk without using certificated but plain old passwords. Then
1) use password manager to store the log on info.
2) does it display the path correctly to a .vol file in the list
3) can you edit the password in the property window
I would like to verify whether this problem relates only to me.
Thanks.

ah one last thing, I just would to verify something:
when you said it works with IE 6 were you referring to the password fields that pops up in a small dialog box or the text fields in the web page themselves, for example can you use password manager to log on to this forum site.
The popup dialog box works fine for me but not with text fields.
thanks.

Yes, I saved a password from IE6 with the TATT. I forget whether it worked again when logging in, as I use IE so infrequently -even less now, thanks to add-in extension from icantux in another topic. Also, once again I have recently removed CSS7, having installed it yet again this morning.xcoll2001 wrote:Nick Y: I have a question - did you the Type and Transfer tool to save passwords from IE since that's the only way I can do it. (BTW, why worry about Firefox as it can save passwords anyway? Well, it can save for most pages, but not all. TATT, in CSS6, filled in the gap.)

Nick Y: my concern isn't primarily related to Firefox. It's how CSS 7 just doesn't seemed to be working as expected in other areas as well which is affecting our workflow here. When we had CSS 6 the only problem we had was with firefox which for reasons you mentioned can be easily bypassed. Albeit CSS 7 introduces lots of problems for us.
I am tempted to uninstall CSS 7, but i'm wary that it may cause more problems knowing tightly integraded CSS 7 with a couple of recent updates from Lenovo.

Quite agree.xcoll2001 wrote:Nick Y: my concern isn't primarily related to Firefox. As I have nothing protected, in particular -I am not using a secure disk; password manager has no passwords stored(!), etc, removal was fairly simple, as long as you do not want to go back to CSS6, which I have not managed yet.xcoll2001 wrote:I am tempted to uninstall CSS 7, but i'm wary that it may cause more problems knowing tightly integraded CSS 7 with a couple of recent updates from Lenovo.
Use Windows Add or Remove pograms to remove CSS7, or use Software Installer, but note problem I spotted above. Then remove CSS folder from Programs/Lenovo if you want to. All my fingerprints still work, for logging on, just don't have CSS is use. (Hence I do not have any added security, bar a 300GB drive sitting next to me. OK for me, but I am sure not for others, like yourself.)

From my experience, which may be wrong (-and I hope so!) once CSS7 has been installed, you cannot revert back to CSS6 without major surgery... I have experimented with all sorts, including the registry and have had no luck.xtrem wrote:where can I dl CSS 6?

Password manager doesn't work for me either
xColl2001: I tried the test and get the same result as you. PM registers the pw against Explorer.exe not the vol file. Because I don't share private disks with other machines or people, I always use certificates, so haven't noticed the problem.
Also, I don't use PM for fields within web pages, but have just tried it (logging in here) and it fails for me too.
Thanks for your tip re the fingerprint scanner susceptibility to EMF interference -
I have noticed that the problem is consistently worse in some physical environments than others but couldn't quite put my finger on the reason

A mod suggested I come to this thread. My T41 is now an inanimate brick after updating to the latest version of this stupid program.
I have a T41. Last night I ran Software Updater to update all my IBM software. One of the things that updated was the Client Security solution. I had been logging in before, no problem.
Now I can't boot up. I get the screen that says "checking the status of the embedded security chip" and a popup behind it that says "There was a problem connecting to a critical service. It is possible that anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connnection. Please refer to the readme for more details."
If I click "OK" on this box I get another Client Security popup that says "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to log on." Doing that results in absolutely nothing.
I turned off the security chip in the BIOS and that did nothing. I can also reach the pre-desktop area - but I can't do anything else, much less get to my Norton firewall or antivirus to adjust any settings - if I knew what those were.
Help! Any suggestions welcome - I really don't want to have to return the machine to its initial configuration and reload everything in the world.

chazas: Sounds similar to the problem I had when I first installed the latest FingerPrint s/w (5.5) You need to remove 5.4 first and then install 5.5 See 'Problem with latest Fingerprint s/w update (to version 5.5)' at http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=25653.
In safe mode, I had to go back to an earlier date and then try again, this time removing 5.4 first. (Even rolling back, I cannot get rid of CSS7)
ps: Additionally, you could try looking at 'Cannot logon after CSS V7 install' in this forum (thinkpads.com Support Community Forum Index -> Windows OS) and perhaps try contacting 'dkunkle'; the description matches yours.

Tony's X60s: Thanks for testing out PM for me. It seemed that at least with the Webpages that Password manager will always registered the .exe path rather than the url. It worked with 3 different sites but only with password pop-up dialog boxes. However with desktop application it always register the actual application path not a generic explorer.exe.
Nick Y: I am curious, when you tried to uninstall CSS 7 do you still have Fingerprint SW 5.5 and/or R&R 3.1? It is to my understanding the three require one another thus uninstalling one will need to uninstall the rest.

Correct; 5.5. and 3.1 still installed. I will need to check, but I thought 3.1 requires 5.5, whereas CSS7 does not require either if starting from 3.0, 5.4 nd CSS6. Info has a long series of tables of all the upgrade combinations, so will read through again.xcoll2001 wrote:Nick Y: I am curious, when you tried to uninstall CSS 7 do you still have Fingerprint SW 5.5 and/or R&R 3.1? Authentication loop with no exit
Is anyone else getting this? It happens to me intermittently - frustratingly not often enough for me to get a fix on exactly why.
I restore from suspend or unlock (from a Fn/F2 lock) by swiping a finger. It seems to work normally
then...
I get a message saying I have no fingerprints enrolled
, so I click OK and get a logon dialogue box. I click through to confirm my ID and get the next box which asks for my password. I enter the correct password and it seems to work normally, then ... I get a message saying I don't have a password configured for that ID
! I click OK and it asks me to swipe a finger.
I go around this loop trying everything I can think of to break out, but no success, so it's press the power button for 10 seconds to reset.
Any other fellow sufferers? Any thoughts on cause?

CSS 7 and the "Private Disk"... HOw does it all wo
I posted this on a different thread but this seems to be the more "up-to-date" one -- so I will try here...
I just got a ThinkPad R52 (from the IBM EPP "Used" Site). Seems to work just fine and I decided (likely due to Paranoia) that I should install CSS 7 (This TP is likely to be "traveling" outside the house a fair amount of the time). The R52 does NOT have the fingerprint reader and I did NOT specify any certificates.
The only passwords that were "fed" in were for: Administrator and two Users (each with admin rights).
I now find that when I bring up the CSS application and try to "Access" the SecureDrive (to change the Admin password), I am unable to do so. No matter WHAT password gets input, I get a message that I input an invalid password (!!) which is a bit on the frustrating side.
I later found in the "Hints and Tips" on one of the Lenonvo ThinkVantage pages that the Admin password is generated by the SYSTEM (and, therefore, the mount option should be set to "Mount after User is Logged in"). I am NOT making this up!!
Does anyone know anything about this? Is there any 1/2-way decent documentation that specifically disucsses the ADMINISTRATION of this SecureDrive? I did not see it in any of the doc's on the Lenovo site. Of course, maybe I was just looking in the wrong place...
Along the same lines, I could not find how to DELETE the SecureDrive and just start over again defining it (short of trying to uninstall everything which is NOT what I want to do.
I did submit a query to IBM / Lenovo Tech Support but I am not sure if I will get an answer since the 6-month warranty turns out to be ONLY on hardware....
Thanks in advance for any suggestions that you may have (including where to locate the APPROPRIATE doc's).....

I am not using CSS. In fact I won't touch it with a 10-foot pole. However, I am going to try and see if I can find some documentation to help you guys out. This is all I found for now. I will look more later when I get the time.

Any information on cssplanarswap.exe?
Thanks GJ - much appreciated.
I have gone over the second one carefully (already applied the MS hotfix mentioned in the first) and the only items that seem similar to my bugs refer to use of a program called cssplanarswap.exe as the cure - it is in the program files/css folder and is supposed to bind the keys to the chip. However, there is no other mention of it in any IBM or Lenovo documentation that I can find.
I am most reluctant to just run it without knowing exactly what it does. The name implies it is used when chip or MOB are replaced, but the hints and tips seem to indicate it has wider uses.

Documentation for CSS 7
Thank you for the links that you posted. The first one is a "propaganda" link (more or less) which really just provides a very high level overview of the product (which systems it runs on, links to "hints and tips", etc.).
The second link is -- apparently the ONLY up-to-date documentation on CSS 7 but I have found it cumbersome to use. It is NOT really geared for the CSS "User" but rather someone administering CSS ove an entire enterprise. There is also a "supplement" that is as big as the original!
I tried looking in there once before and did not find an answer... Oh well, maybe I just stumbled on a bug....
