Rescue and Recovery updated to 3.1. Lost after System rest?

#1 Post by Wheeep » Tue Jun 06, 2006 5:25 am

Hi,

I updated Rescue and Recovery to Version 3.1

The Layout of the Predesktop changed slightly. After I had to made a full system restore to factory installed content no RandR is installed anymore under Windows, is this correct?

While I haven't personally verified this, it is my understanding that losing the ability to boot into Rescue and Recovery should only occur with the older ThinkPads - from the T41 and back. I am not sure how Rescue and Recovery is affected in Windows. From the T42 onward, the HPA is no longer used, but instead WinPE is used. This is also referred to as a type 12 partition. Note following.
Rescue and Recovery Readme wrote:Consideration 12
computers that have a hidden protected area (HPA), also referred
to as PARTIES, and have the Rescue and Recovery program installed will not be able to boot into either the PARTIES or Rescue and Recovery workspace after recovering the original factory contents. To enable the PARTIES area again, restore a backup using either the Rescue and Recovery program in the Windows environment or by booting from rescue media and then uninstall the Rescue and Recovery program.

I think this is not concerning my question.

Its a T60

It came with RandR 3.0

I updated to 3.1

After restoring Factory defaults there is neither 3.0 not 3.1 installed in Windows. PreDesktop is fine... (And looks like 3.1 should look)

Look in Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Do you see ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery? If it is not there, then I would suggest that you try reinstalling Rescue and Recovery.

It has become my opinion that it is generally best to stay with the version of Rescue and Recovery that comes installed on your ThinkPad. I update practically everything else, but I see that one can run into problems when different versions of Rescue and Recovery are laying around.

I like the restore factory contents option of Rescue and Recovery, but the backup program is just not that good. I would recommend using a different program for backups.

I suspect you extracted the downloaded file (it takes a while) and did not actually install it. Good to know all's well now though.
I just installed it, but get the hotfix error - can't seem to figure out how to disable it. Did you figure it out?

I had a problem when I upgraded R&R. My T42 came with R&R 1.00.0033.004. When I upgraded to R&R 3.027, I uninstalled 1.00.0033.004 first, and the upgrade went fine. Later an update patch came out to raise the version to 3.037. The patch would not work for me. I uninstalled 3.027 then installed the full version of 3.037, and all went well.

I have since had to restore using the Product Recovery Discs (for other reasons), and I have decided to just stay with R&R 1.00.0033.004 this time. I don't use R&R backup anyway. It's too slow, and it doesn't do a verify after the write (to CD or DVD).

If you are having problems, I would suggest uninstalling R&R using Windows Add or Remove Programs, then reinstalling a full version of R&R. If you are interested, the installation program for the original version is in: C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\IBMRNR, at least it is on my T42. In newer models it may be in a different directory, but I am pretty sure it is on your hard drive.

Thanks. I did try the uninstall/install tack, but the issue remains.
I get a pop up box that directs me to this page:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-63271

Curiosly the microsoft link to the hotfix mentioned above is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890951/en-us

but seems to be a pay-for support hotfix!

I might just have to abandon R&R for good now.

I don't "think" you have to pay for it. Take a look at this thread. Read what DIGITALgimpus posted in about his 5th post of the following thread.

You're right. Actually the software installer calls up the hotfix for download. I'll give that a try. Thanks.
