How do I get my T20 to hibernate under Win98SE?

#1 Post by Clockface » Thu Jun 08, 2006 10:26 am

I have a T20 with 384MB RAM and Windows 98 SE, which works fine, but I can't get it to be able to hibernate. By hibernate, I mean that it will save the memory and CPU state to hard disc and totally shut down (so it then consumes no power), then when I turn the T20 back on, it will load the "snapshot" state into memory and CPU, and it will be as though the T20 was never interupted. I think that's what most users by the term "Hibernate", but if I'm using the wrong word then I apologise. Anyway, the function I'm looking for is the one I describe above.

I have enough space on my C: drive, of course, and I will defrag the drive first, before I create the permanent hibernation swap file (which I would think would be just over 384MB in size, although it might also include the video RAM too, I don't know).

Can anyone please tell me how to find/activate the hibernation function, as I thought all laptops had it as standard?

Thanks for any answers.

Been so long since I ran 98 that I can only offer hope, not a procedure.

My T20 came with 98 when it was new, and hibernation did work - at least to the extent that it ever worked under 98. Sometimes it wouldn't work, sometimes it would, sometimes it would refuse to wake up, etc. But the basic function was there out of the box.

Souind like someone may have disabled hibernation - try looking in the BIOS, I think there was an option there.

BTW - a T20 with 384 MB of RAM will run XP just fine, and after I upgraded the T20 to XP I never had another hibernation problem. Hibernation under XP is [censored] near flawless.

There is a Hibernation utility package for Win98 available for download. I haven't try it, as I never installed 98 on a ThinkPad, but I hope it helps.

Thanks for the answers.

Egibbs, if hibernation is that temperamental then I don't think I'll bother, thanks. I did think of putting XP on the laptop, but I don't think that for me the pros (faster booting up and slightly more reliable) outway the cons (I've heard games run slower under XP than 98, plus I need DOS mode for some game).

Orevin, I've tried that program, but my laptop just locks up, I think I'll give up on the idea, especially since at the moment it's too hot to mess around with a computer (it's been scortching hot for the past few days here (North West England)).
