Need to reinstall Internet Explorer

#1 Post by cwirth » Fri Jun 09, 2006 9:41 am

We have a Thinkpad R51 with XP sp2. It seems Internet Explorer is corrupt. I tried to uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs and then reinstall but it still is corrupt. I have a CD with IE 6.0 but when I try to install from the CD I get a message that the version already installed is newer than the CD. I know the version of IE on the Thinkpad is 6.x. I tried to install from Microsoft's website and get the same message. Is there anyway to install the same version of IE that originally came with the computer without reformating and doing a quick recovery of the entire computer?

I know that it isn't a perfect solution, but what about upgrading to IE 7.0?

Actually upgrading to 7.0 was a thought and that is what I probably will do if I can't find a way to reinstall the current version. Don't want to do a quick restore if I can help it.

I had a similar problem -exacerbated by Microsoft only allowing a download of IE using IE! Load of use that was!
In the end I found a copy of XP SR2 on the net and (re-) installed that, which put IE back into the T43. (Its only use is for Windows updates; firefox otherwise.)

Did you know you could run IE and MS windows updates from within firefox? I did that all the time before completely switching over to linux...

Take a look at this firefox extension:
