Access Connections????

#1 Post by JHEM » Fri Jun 16, 2006 1:25 pm

OK, bear with me for a few minutes as I'm going around in circles.

Son and DIL are down for the weekend, so I grabbed his/my X31 to install an Atheros a/b/g card in it in place of the Intel .11b card that it came with.

All went OK on reboot, no 1802 error and the card was recognized (Phillips/Atheros/IBM Tri-Mode) and drivers updated and installed when I ran the software installer.

BUT! Access Connection, which had been working fine with the Intel card, now says it can't find any WiFi card installed! Uninstalled and reinstalled AC twice but there's no change.

XP sees the card just fine and if I allow it to control the card it works and finds both my WAPs here at home as well as the usual 1/2 dozen from my neighbors.

WTH am I forgetting here to get AC working again? Fn+F5 works and allows me to turn the card off and on. Wireless Connection Status shows the card correctly and allows me to turn it off and on also, but AC won't connect and reports "Adapter not found"!!!!

Somebody put me out of my misery!

Have you done the whole routine.....
  • Uninstall AC, then reboot
    Uninstall WiFi drivers, then reboot
Set a Windows restore point (just in case)
Clear out anything at all from the file system and registry that looks even vaguely related to wireless and AC, then reboot
Start from scratch and reload WiFi drivers then reload AC
Cheers,

Bill

Good morning Bill,

Yeah, I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything several times, still no joy.

Right now I'm just letting XP handle it, but it's going to be a bit more work for the boy to setup all of his WAPs again.

I know there's a correct procedure to follow when doing this, but for the life of me I can't recall it or find any instructions online. I went through the same difficulties with my T41p when I first got it and installed an Atheros card, but of course I didn't leave myself any notes on the method, not even any crumbs.

Ah well, as long as Fn+F5 still works (it does) I'll leave well enough alone for now, even though this will prey on my feeble brain until resolved.

Regards,

James

Access Connections & Atheros

#4 Post by schen » Tue Jun 20, 2006 2:34 pm

I think it's an driver incombatibility between AC 4.x and the Atheros cards. I've run an Atheros 5001X+ in my T23 the whole time I've had the machine and it worked fine right up until I tried to upgrade the AC to the new version. I uninstalled it and installed v.3.7 and it works fine. My wife's A30 with the Actiontec card worked fine, but AC 4.x stopped working immediately when I put in a Atheros 5002 card and I had to load AC 3.7

Obviously this is a small sample, but I'm betting that the new AC has some sort of confict with the cards that aren't "IBM Blessed" :?

What driver version are you using ?
I had some problems with the new driver (4.1) with AC 4.12.
Tried to rollback to the 4.0 version, and that did the trick.
