Static IP in Access Connection

Hello!

I was wondering if there is anyway to set up a profile in Access Connection so that it allows dynamic switching of wired/wireless, with static IP.

When I set the profile type to the one that accepts both wired/wireless, selecting the faster of the two, Access Connection insists that I use DHCP instead of static. (Popup tells me to use DHCP with this profile.)

Anyone know the rationale behind this? And possibly a workaround? It'd be convenient to be able to keep the same ip on wired/wireless in my house, especially considering I can't connect to both at the same time since it switches to the faster of the two.

I'm on an X31 with the Intel wireless-b card. And the latest Access Connection. (At least, latest as of a few weeks ago.) Not that I think it'll make a difference.

I had the same problem.
I do not have me pc here right now, but I'll take a stab at it.

When you are setting up the profile, do NOT select the option that says "best available connection" After you de-select that, you can input your manual static IP settings.

Thanks. Unfortunately though, that means it'll stop automatically disabling/switching from wireless to wired as soon as I plug in the network cable.

Was hoping I could get the best of both worlds. ^_^

True enough, but it's really easy to switch back to a another profile.

Just click on the Access Connections Icon on the SYSTRAY, and select the profile you want.

When I first got my T42, I was using the Windows XP software to manage the connection. After I upgraded to the 3.21 Version of Access Connections, I am sold on this utility. It works great, and makes it very easy to change profiles. Without the software, you have to go into the adapter settings to handle the IP settings. As you know, it's a bit tedious to configure for static IP, and then switch back to a DHCP connection.

Well, I've got to bring the topic back up.

I've got my T42p for 2 days now and I am playing around with the IBM tools.

Now I am stuck with the IBM Access Connections with the same problem.

When I create a new Profile I got the following types of network connections (combo-box):
best available connection
Ethernet
802.11
broadband connection
dial-up connection
wireless WAN-connection

(hopefully these are the right terms in the english version - cause I have got the german one...

)

So if I wanna have Ethernet and WLAN enabled the only way I can do this is by selecting "best available connection".
And with this setting chosen the Ethernet connection cannot have a static IP Adress and must be configured by DHCP.

I am a little confused with what jsmit86 wrote, because I don't have the "option" to deselect "best available connection". This is just a network connection type I can use.

So the only way I see right now to deal with the "problem" to create for every possible situation a seperate profile - not being able to have one profile "home" (for instance) with a static Ehternet address and WLAN enabled so if you unplug the Thinkpad you can use the WLAN connection without changing the profile.

You would need to create a profile for each type, but for most users, Static IP is used for a specific connection, and NOT when "roaming.

In my example, I use static IP for my home behind a Linksys router.
I configured 2 profiles, HOME STATIC IP WIRELESS, and HOME STATIC IP WIRED. I use these so I can make use of some software that requires port forwarding. For STATIC IP, you need to specify the type of connection so Access connections can configure the proper adapter settings.

When I travel, I will use a profile called WIRED DHCP connection, that is configured as a wired LAN connection. The local network will assign an IP address (DHCP)

Best Available connection is good for when you may be connecting wired, or wireless, but you cannot supply the static IP address yourself.

I do not know if this clears things up a bit, but even if you had several different "profiles" with static IP, you still only need to configure them one time. This is much easier than manually configuring the adapter in Windows.

The things you wrote I figured out today too.

And right now I have got the same 2 profiles you wrote - home_wired and home_wireless.

So if I really want to have roaming (with the "best" connection as the current connection) I need DHCP which is suitable for most occasions.
It isn't a big deal to switch between the 2 profiles - I just thought there's a way to do it little bit more conveniant.

But I am quite happy with the tool right now, so it won't bother me too much.

I have Access Connections 3.30 running with 10 different connections available - 7 wired and 3 wireless. I do not use Best Available Connection. I defined 3 different wireless connection and 1 wired connection with 7 saved ports. Access Connections automatically picks up the correct connection. Seems to work ok. ... JDHurst

JDHURST -

so if you were using a wireless connection at home, and went somewhere with a wired connection, Access connections would automatically pick the wired profile?

Exactly so. Now if the "somewhere" were somewhere I had not been before, Access Connections would prompt me to save the name of the connection. I do that, and the next time it is completely automatic. This assumes the wired connection is bland DHCP.

Wired connections are not bland. Different SSID and WEP key for each one, so I require a different profile for each case.

Whatever - after I carefully config, the whole thing is completely automatic. Very nice!

I should add this:
I have two secured wireless profiles (my own and a friend's), plus one generic unsecured profile. I went to his place today, started up my laptop and there was a generic wireless signal about, so Access Connections tried to use it and could not, so it didn't connect. So I clicked on the system tray and picked the correct profile and I got a connection right away. So the automation is excellent, but not letter perfect.
