I think i must be missing something obvious, and i didnt find it by searching.
I am trying to reinstall w2k on my t20 thinkpad, i go through all 4 boot disks, then i switch out the
floppy drive to the cd rom, then i select the "reinstall" option, but it comes back and says "No cd-rom found, windows
cannot continue"
(and no the CD itself isnt bootable)
Do i need a external cd rom to reinstall?
NOTE:
on my previous thinkpad the floppy and cd were permenent, installed so i didnt have this issue.
thx

See this for IBM's instructions on your question:

Re: Newbie
You either need an external floppy drive or you need to use this Universal CD Support Boot Diskette utility to enable CD support on the HD from a DOS prompt. Be sure to follow the instructions in "bootdisk.txt".rhull007 wrote:on my previous thinkpad the floppy and cd were permenent, installed so i didnt have this issue.
The simplest resolution to this problem is to find a BOOTable CD of W2K and use that to install your OS. Simply set the CD drive as the first BOOT device in the BIOS.

swapable drives
You need an external floppy drive to use the boot disks. When the setup starts and see what is connected and can then only use those devices that were connected at the time of starting setup. Its annoying, but that is the problem. The others have pointed out ways how to also resolve this issue.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
