hello there, i have encountered a problem with instaling microsoft java virtual machine on my t30 thinkpad. it just simply doesn't work. i need it to run matlab 6.5 (or 7.x). i tried both win200 and xp systems and nothing works. help me!

I've installed the most recent JVM from Sun's site with the student edition of Matlab (7.0.1.15 R14 SP1), and it works ... okay. It can be a bit unresponsive, however, and I've noticed that Matlab crashes frequently, particularly if several figures are open.

Have you tried running Matlab with the -nojvm flag? It dumbs down the UI, (in particular, tab completion and the built-in editor), but it should work without java.

Lastly, I'd like to note something that has surprised me: even if you install Sun's jvm, Matlab won't automatically switch to that new version, and you have to swap it manually. (So in fact, Matlab was probably crashing with its internal version of java, regardless of any Sun jvm updates.) The instructions on changing the jvm are here:

You'll need to set the path to your jvm. In my case, it was c:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07. You can double-check that your changes were successful by typing "version -java" inside of matlab. I only made this change tonight, so I can't yet say if it reduces the number of crashes.

I hardly think that it being "too good" was the problem.

If this was part of the fallout from Visual J++, it was because Microsoft was trying to "assimilate" the java standard.
