Folder update/opening takes forever

Hi there!

Got a recent problem: everytime I open a folder with different files in it the T40p stops and the hdd works like mad. After a few seconds the fan kicks in ferociously. apparently the computer has to work a lot updating the contents of my folders. I defragment at least once a week and have decent amount of ram (1GB). How can I speed these things up?
