New computer, what programs do I need/should have?

#1 Post by bioyuki » Tue Aug 17, 2004 12:02 am

Getting my T42 on Thursday and so far I have:

Symantec Corporate AV
Office 2003 Suite
Firefox 0.9.3
Photoshop CS
Acrobat Reader 6
ImageReady
AbsoluteFTP
Nikon View 6
Nikon Capture 4
AIM (which version doesn't have spyware?)
DeadAIM
Winamp 2
Netstumbler
Realplayer ( but I need it for school)

Am I missing anything? :?:

Um, how would we know? It is YOUR computer. Things like Nikon Capture are essential to some people (like me) and absolutely useless to others. The only absolutely essential thing I don't see on your list is a firewall.

I had installed and later uninstalled Nikon View and Nikon capture for my Nikon camera. But I found them useless, despite the warning sign to install those software before connecting the camera. The built-in photo import in XP will do the job and for the editing the photoshop you have should be enough.

less program at the startup, faster to boot/use computer, I guess.

The spyware in the latest version of AIM is optional (weatherbug and wildtangent). Just uncheck the boxes during install.

Also, for all of you who are like me, and despise real player, check this out: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Rea ... native.htm

BSPlayer rocks for playing video. And how about Nero and Ethereal?

I like Nikon View and Nikon Capture. I always shoot in RAW, so Nikon View is great for previewing the RAW files to see which ones I want to process. Then I use Capture to batch save those particular RAW files to TIF. And then I use Photoshop CS to do my post-processing. The pics always look better in Nikon Capture as opposed to photoshop's CameraRaw plugin, though many seem to say that CameraRaw is better.

Do you have something for noise removal? I'm using Noise Ninja at the moment.
... oops, thought this was a Nikon forum. :D

I use trillian to control all my instant messengers. No spyware.

How about Partition Magic and Ghost (or their equivalents)?
... and Nero, like whealey mentioned.
