Very Strange Problem

#1 Post by spacedyevest » Sun Aug 20, 2006 2:10 pm

So i've been using my t60p for about 3 months now and I absolutely love it but there is one down fall to it.....Symantec!! I've been having problems with the client firewall by symantec ever since I've have the machine. The main problem was that I couldn't connect to an FTP site without shutting down the whole security center. And after a symantec tech guy told me I should uninstall and reinstall I said I've had enough.

So I went on to find a new anti-virus (AVG I went with) and a new firewall. Since I've previously used zonealarm I figured why not. After installing Zone alarm my comp starting doing some really weird things. Everytime it seemed, zonealarm requested a program access to the internet my computer would hang. Not really hang but just unresponsive to the mouse and keyboard, however, the machine would still be running any apps in the backround just fine.

So I said enough with you zonealarm (btw if you know why zonealarm did this I would be interested to hear and any recommendations to another firewall would be helpful) and uninstalled it. Now I have found another blooding problem...this one more serious. Everytime I press the "go-back" and "forward" buttons (the keys next to the up arrow) the computer hangs just as it did before. Unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse commands. The only key that does work is the windows keys but since all the other keys are unresponsive I can't do anything with that.

So after sorting though all the troubleshooting and user forums I'm asking for help or any suggestions that would help me rid of these inferno computer hangs

Thanks

You have many options. Certainly the free version of Sygate is a good alternative I would think. I use NetVeda:

Sounds like your major problems started after the uninstall of the client firewall (I've heard no complaints about ZoneAlarm -- I use it myself, FWIW). I've seen posts on this board about getting special uninstall programs from Symantec to uninstall their anti-virus programs (which can be difficult to completely uninstall otherwise). Maybe the situation is similar with the Symantec client firewall???

Also, maybe try a registry cleaner? (and I assume you're run AVG to make sure there's no viruses?)

Kerio is another good firewall to use and it is also free for home use. In fact, I am trying out the latest full version license right now; I will report back on how well it does. :)

She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

I've been using Kerio for months and love it. The latest release has an issue with NTVDM (16 bit windows processes). So I went back a version, until they fix it.
