New Vista RC1 on T60

#1 Post by AssPenny » Mon Sep 04, 2006 12:14 am

Well, since RC1 is out, i decided to give it a run.

I just got it off MSDN and slapped in on my T60 2623-d6u. So far its working pretty sweet.

Positives
The Areo effects are fully functional and look very good.
Performance seems about the same as XP on this box.
Not a single driver issue, it picked up everything and it ALL works.
Sidebar is very nice, some nice add in gadgets.
Shutdown time is faster.
Start up time is about the same.
General looks is nice.
Like a "finished" version of XP.

Negatives
Chews up about 200 more mb or memory.
I have to use the windows wireless connection, no Intel.
Limited support of Antivirus at this time. (Trend only)

Overall its pretty [censored] nice and im happy to see that the current technology is fully supported without having to [censored] drivers. Its pretty much filled with foo-foo, but im ok with that. Im sure that will be the major gripe is that it is too bloated, the same gripe they used with XP.

So, go install it and get familiar with it. :)

This hasn't got much to do with Thinkpads from my side... but I installed pre-RC1 this weekend on my desktop machine.

To me it seems too slow and all the added security annoys me since I have to click a lot of windows. Also I have to get used to all the major changes which makes it harder for me to perfectly configure windows.

Also I couldn't install Daemon Tools and the ATI drivers doesn't allow to run theater mode for TV-out.

In general a lot of software still needs to be prepared/made for Vista.
But it is fun to play around a bit with but most of the time I use Windows XP.

Yeah, i was kinda honked off about deamon tools not working either. Im sure that will quickly change.

I have been also running into an issue with the wireless not reconnecting after standby. This isnt a problem in my dell with a 2200BG card, just the IBM with the Intel 3945ABG.

I upgraded to RC1 from 5552 last Sat. so fae run good, I like the funcy looking very much, and will keep it on my T60p.

Some cons:
Access connection not working, even I copy a location file from my T40, but I can connect to internet with problem, windows wirless takes the control.
Almost all Fn+F* keys not showing on the screen. Fn+F5 now control only BT, not wireless, and green light of wireless below screen remains off.

I decided to try RC1 after trying Beta 2 and build 5456, they were jokes compared to this build. I was able to install it using my serial from Beta 2.

Positives.
better theme than XP but I dont have no aero lol
Performance seems about the same as XP on this box
I just the zoom pictures options on here.
Everything is all organized.
Search engine is good for you to find what ever you want on ur computer.
Shutdown time is faster.
Start up time is about the same.
General looks is nice.
Like a "finished" version of XP.

Negatives
chews about 300 mb of RAM or more.
doesnt read my pcmia 2.0 card
doesnt read pci serial ports.
needs to be more trimmed for RAM usage if they recommend 512MB of RAM or more.
hibernation still doesnt work niether does Freeze Dry.

I am running it on a Think A20M
Pentium 3 M 850mhz
Ati M 8MB video card
512 MB of RAM pc 100,133 Kingston
28 GB harddrive

Yeah, the beta 2 serial is good all the up to RC1 at least.

So far its pretty good.

Im having some wireless reconnect problems trying to resume from standby.

And some shutdown issues, where it just restarts instead.

Yes, RC1 works fine...actually well.

Unfortunately the Catalyst Beta Driver is very beta-ish and messed up my system...ended up with the standard vga driver which was worse than the driver vista installed in the first time...and with any measure taken it would not reinstall the first better driver....

so now I am taking ownership in XP of the vista installation to delete it since it's very hard to delete otherwise and I cannot afford to format the partition...

:)

But Vista is commendable.

Exact same issues with a T42p here. Looks like we're waiting for Lenovo to updates device drivers for Vista.

I took out Vista RC 1 because it was a VRAM hog, if they could tune it down I would install it again. 5342 video was stable and working on full speed, but on this it hogs up all my video resources.

RC1 installed and ran fine here on my 2007-F4G with 1.5 GB of RAM until I became venturesome enough to hook up my desktops TFT in order to check if my x1300 would manage the total of 2680x2074 pixels with AeroGlass still working. It did, but after disconnecting the TFT (after disabling the use of it as an extended desktop area, of course) Vista wouldn't shut down anymore.

It said "Logging Off", the hd was busy and then it stayed just there, no "Shut Down" anymore. I had to press the power button long enough to shut off the "hard" way. I thought a restart probably would fix it, but it didn't, though everything else worked as usual. I just wiped the partition Vista was installed on and will try again.

dang, I desperately need Intel Proset for my LEAP network access... that's the only thing that's keeping me away from Vista.

Anyone has any suitable alternative software that will work in Vista?

I installed Windows Vista beta 2, build 5384 on my T42. After a Windows Update, the Intel 2200bg card worked just great. The built-in Internet Connection (if I am describing it properly) works a lot better than XP IMO. The icon in the Notification Area shows when you are connected to your router, and adds a globe when you have a true internet connection.

Whether RC1 and the newer WiFi hardware of the T60 work together, I cannot say. All I know is that Vista beta 2, build 5384 works fine with my Intel 2200bg card in my T42. I have ordered RC1 and am awaiting its arrival.

The only hardware I could not get to work at all was the dial-up modem. I did not spend a great deal of time troubleshooting this problem though.
