Installing Visata RC1 X40 X41-Don't Upgrade
Installing Visata RC1 X40 X41-Don't Upgrade
Just tried and failed three times to upgrade from Win XP Pro to Windows Vista without joy. Last try I installed to a clean partition and everything went smooth. I had cloned my drive and XP partition just prior to attempting the first upgrade, which was a good thing since after the third attempt Vista could not roll me back to XP as it had in the first two trys and I lost the ability to boot to XP. I also read an article on E-Week that also chronicles others who had trouble upgrading XP to Vista on a T series, and they too recommend a clean install vs. upgrading. Hope this saves some people.

NEVER EVER EVER do an upgrade on any OS install. Doesn't matter if your talking about Windows, Linux, Mac OS, whatever, upgrades are always a bad idea.
"An atheist is just somebody who feels about Yahweh the way any decent Christian feels about Thor or Baal or the golden calf. As has been said before, we are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

I've tested the newest build of Vista, and it wasn't all that great.
I'll probably not install it on my computer, but I probably have to install it on my work computer (late next year or later, when it's common) - my guess) since my job will probably require it.
Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 6.06...And I'm actually more impressed by that than Vista. Vista is just eyecandy and DRM. Ubuntu is user-friendly and no DRM in sight

How many times does this bear repeating over the years?asiafish wrote:NEVER EVER EVER do an upgrade on any OS install. Doesn't matter if your talking about Windows, Linux, Mac OS, whatever, upgrades are always a bad idea.

Actually I do, and I tried this on purpose. Which is why I cloned the drive to begin with. I was looking to see how difficult it will be going forward for some of my clents who will undoubtedly want to upgrade instead of start fresh. I got my answer, and shared the experience here because I know most average users will prefer to upgrade instead of reload everything from scratch.JHEM wrote:How many times does this bear repeating over the years?asiafish wrote:NEVER EVER EVER do an upgrade on any OS install. I honestly didn't expect Vista to choke on such a simple upgrade, but we're talking about Microsoft here, and all bets are off when it comes to their software.
As for Mac OSx, I've upgraded from OS9 thru OSX 10.4 with not so much as a reboot, much less any hiccups. Too bad Microsoft wants to only duplicate the competition in appearance and cosmetics only-as for functionality and positive user experience, we are destined to be eternal and perpeual beta testers for Windoze.zzzz
I love being able to have dual operating systems on my MacBook Pro with both OSX and XP running, (via Parallels), but my Thinkpad(s) always are my first choice.
If only Jobs would finally start marketing OSX to the XP community at large, we could have the best of both worlds-The best notebooks with the best OS. Maybe then Gates and CO will finally wake up and smell the coffee.
Probably not.

I didn't answer the poll, because I feel it didn't have a choice that reflects my feelings on this.
If my IBM/Lenovo comes out with all the drivers and software to operate my T42 as I want to operate it in Vista, then I might upgrade. However, if upgrading would reduce the features inherent in my present setup, then why upgrade my T42? In that case, I'll wait for my next notebook purchase - whenever that may be.
FWIW, I am playing with Vista beta on my T42 (using a spare hard drive). It works pretty good, but without most of the advanced software features provided by IBM/Lenovo. Admittedly, I have not tried installing too many things, as my first trials with the XP UltraNav driver and modem driver were unsuccessful (these drivers have since been released for Vista, and the Vista versions work).

Well, heres how I see Vista in my future:
From what I've seen thusfar, its bloated and has way too much eye-candy. Will I ever upgrade? I will probably be forced to at some point, but I plan on milking XP for as long as possible, at least until Vista SP1. I also hope that by the point I am forced to upgrade, Linux will have been developed far enough to work out of the box on laptops. It is far enough at this point to use it on a desktop, with Windows running in a VM.
What I really wish Microsoft would do is release a Windows 2000-like version of Vista, something that is stripped down of all the crap and bloat that power users might not want. Something like that, I would give my kudos to Microsoft and actually use.
As for OEM Vista systems, I dont much have to worry about that. I just bought my X60s, which I hope to get a few years out of, and I build my own desktops
Basically, unless they release a 2000 like OS, I will keep XP for as long as possible, then hopefully migrate my primary mobile OS to Linux
