Start menu problems

#1 Post by TAA1321 » Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:42 am

I am having problems with few of my start meu icons...the "Search" and few others do not respond and any attempt to fix this failed down. I did try Kelley's Korner without success. Also the system restore stopped responding and my back up halts on halfway...Any idea what is it?
Thank You

You don't say what OS. One way with XP is to download SP2 and install or re-install SP2. That writes enough files to sometime fix this stuff. But the Start Menu is really, really basic to Windows, so something may have hosed your system to require a rebuild.

With all those problems, I would try to get my hands on a Windows install CD and do a recovery installation. Here is the procedure: How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP Failing that, see below.

Maybe your best bet at this time is to reinstall from scratch. I see a couple of different ThinkPads in your sig, and the method of reinstall may be different for each. As I am not familiar with the particulars of either model, I'll give some general procedures. Note that in all three cases below, you will lose all existing data and programs on your hard drive. Make sure you have backups to retrieve any data files later.

1. Boot up into Rescue and Recovery by pressing the blue Access IBM button at the beginning of the boot sequence. On some ThinkPads, you need to press the ThinkVantage button or the F11 key instead. When in Rescue and Recovery, choose to restore Factory Contents.
2. Boot up from the Product Recovery Disc set and restore Factory Contents.
3. Boot up from a Windows install CD and reinstall Windows. Make sure you have a legitimate copy with a good Product Key.

EDIT: I see jdhurst replied while I was composing the above. He has a good recommendation.

Sorry!
This happened on my R40 and I am using Windows XP with SP2.
I did try the recommended salution and doesn't helped. It is happened after I did install the Kodak Easy Share Software and did contact with Kodak about they corrupted software. I did run the XP original CD- finally- and found the hidden files to install but no any success. I had to us my back up and delete everything from the computer- via firewire from the A22m- I found hidden files in the Recycle Bin- all belongs to the Apple Quick Time and after i did delete them remotely the Start menu started to work. What a strange fight!
I want to say : Thank you for the helping hand and congratulation for this excellent community!
I am proud to be find so many good help and advice!!!
