Why is WinDVD missing after RnR, and where can I get it?

#1 Post by gtphill » Mon Oct 02, 2006 9:51 am

Hello all!

New reader and poster here. I have been trying to clone my X40 20GB DK1 drive onto a 60GB Hitachi HTC drive I purchased from Newegg. That process has proven to be very involved, and may result in other posts.

Main question:
In the process of trying to clone the original drive, somehow CSS lunched my primary partition. I did a rescue and recovery from the service partition back to factory. I was able to recover and/or download everything but WinDVD.

I looked in IBM tools, where it should be, and it was not there. I have an ultrabase with DVD/CDR for my X40, but somehow my factory state image is missing it.

My laptop is out of warranty now, but I am wondering if there is a way to obtain the WinDVD software?

Thanks!
Phil G

if you restored to factory contents NOT connected to the ultrabase, that is why it did not reload Windid.

The reload process detects the drives connected at the time of reload and installs the appropriate software for the optical drive attached.

Only way to fix, that Im aware of is to reload attached to the ultrabase with at least a combo drive installed to get Windvd installed when the restore process completes.

I am not disagreeing with the other replies to your thread, as I do not have experience with the ultrabase. However, if you have the following directory on your hard drive: C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\DVDPlay\ , you should be able to install WinDVD from it by double-clicking on Setup.exe in that directory.

I am not sure how this ended up in two separate threads, but I replied in the other thread that I did indeed do the install process on the ultrabase, and no windvd was loaded.

The directory DVD play is simply absent!

Can anyone FTP it to me?

Did you ever get anyone to send you a copy of WinDVD? I'm away from home and don't have any recovery disks with me. I had a BSOD episode and had to re-format my hard-drive, losing WinDVD in the process. I'd like it back before I can get home.

There are other options, such as VLC-Player

Thank you for trying to help, but while I'm intrigued by VLC-Player's apparent ability to work with video capture cards, my initial quest is to get back my ability to burn discs; since the VLC web-page has a lot about its capabilities as a player but says nothing about any burn capability, I think I need to keep looking.

The pre-installed IBM utility for this is RecordNow. Check your C: drive for this folder.

If you would have mentioned that in the beginning, you would have received other advice....
WinDVD is only a DVD-player.

And what would that other advice be?

You may have read earlier about my BSOD episode and subsequent re-formatting of my hard-drive and re-installation of Windows XP Pro, which has caused me to lose both RecordNow! and DLA (Drive Letter Access). The update drivers for both of these packages at the Lenovo upgrade web-page don't load if you don't already have the original programs, which I no longer do on account of the BSOD episode. So in fact I'd like to get copies of both of these programs.

Get a set of factory restore disks (put a WTB in the Market forum).
You can't 'pluck' the individual programs out of an other/existing Windows installation.

1) As I recall, the factory restore disks don't include Windows XP, right - XP's a separate installation?

2) I'm also wanting to upgrade my hard-drive - probably to this one from Drive Solutions: http://www.drivesolutions.com/cgi-bin/s ... itemid=lu1; will your restore disks deal with this much larger drive such that full use is made of all of its space (my original drive was only 40G)?

The factory restore disks install XP and return your laptop to it's original software state. You will not have any issues with hard drive size. It will make full use of the larger size.
