Taming the IE 7 Shrew

#1 Post by jdhurst » Sun Oct 22, 2006 12:49 pm

I don't care for eye candy, large icons and so-called easy-to-use interfaces. If others like them, fine - read no farther.

I prefer a working interface and, in particular, I did not like the File Menu being moved to the wrong position.

a) I added the File Menu (in the wrong spot).
b) I move the icon bar as far right as I could and locked the menu so that only the Home icon shows.
c) I disabled the Phishing scheme (I don't get phishing emails because of Spamassassin, and accordingly don't go to phishing sites).
d) I Enabled Tabs, but disabled all the options so I may open tabs only at my discretion and none other.
e) I got rid of Live search and installed Google search (only because I still have not found a way to eliminate the search bar).
f) Caution here *****
I continue to dislike the location of the File Menu and found this solution on the internet which works for me. It is a Registry change, so do not do it if you are squeamish.

1. Close IE7 (All instances)
2. Open RegEdit
3. Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser (find this first and double check)
4. Add the DWORD value ITBar7Position with dword value 1
5. Close RegEdit

Open IE 7 and the File Menu should be directly underneath the blue header bar.

Great Tip. I hated the File Toolbar being below the other address bar.
