Windows XP set-up when booting-up

#1 Post by phineasfreakears » Fri Aug 27, 2004 4:58 pm

I recently purchased a used 600E which seems to work well so far. My problem is that every time I turn it on I get a choice of either "Microsoft Windows XP set-up", or "Microsoft Windows". When I enter "Windows", it boots up O.K. but when I enter "Windows XP set-up", it goes to a blue XP set-up screen, and wants me to install the XP disc. How can I get rid of this set-up choice so that the machine will boot-up normaly?
The operating system is windows 98 SE, not XP.

It appears that someone has partitioned the drive to dual boot but gave up on loading XP so the partition still remains. You'll have to get partition magic or something like that to get rid of your partition. Be careful though...I'd think you're Win98 partition is FAT32, but your XP Partition could be NTFS.

To be totally honest, having owned the 600E myself for several years and having Win98 and W2K on it, Windows2000 (Pro is what I used) is the "sweet spot" for this machine. Instead of trying to recoop the 2nd partition, why don't you save your data and FDISK and load Windows 2000 Pro...you'll be very happy with that setup. All of the drivers are on the IBM site once you get the OS loaded....very simple, very reliable and extremely stable!

I should add, in case you didn't know, that you should change the boot sequence on your 600E to boot first from floppy, use a Win98 boot disc and boot up...then choose type "FDISK" at the blinking promt and select "Y" for largest capacity and then in the next menu window select to "delete the partition." Once the whole partition is the size of the entire disc, then select "partition" again and make it active. After you get out of FDISC, then shut down the machine, either load a bootable Win2000 CDrom (after changing the boot order again to CD/HD), or load the 4 floppies that Win2000 CD will make for you....there is more information on the Microsoft site, and also in a file on the CD as to how to do this.

Anyway, good luck! If you don't have a copy of Win2000 Pro, since it's been out for a while, you should be able to pick it up pretty cheap...even seen them at Target and Walmart....
