W2k Booting

#1 Post by Rex » Sun Oct 29, 2006 3:04 pm

Hi there,

I have a T22 with 20gb hd, split into five partitions. C: (6gb with 4 gb used) has W2k (FAT32); D: is MyDocs (also 6gb, 5 gb used) and the other partitions are for stuff.

From pressing the 'On' button to when I can use the computer, is about 80/90 seconds.

I am building another 60gb hd, W2k but formatted as NTFS. C: is the os (12gb) and the other partitions are as the 20 gb. hd.

Currently, I only have a clean install of W2k, the T22 drivers and Partition Magic. From pressing the 'On' button to when I can use the computer is close to 3 minutes or more. It seems to hang on the W2k splash screen with the progress bar at about half. Then it comes to life again.

Is this normal W2k/NTFS behaviour or have I done something wrong?

Grateful for any suggestions.

Many thanks in advance,

Rex

It is not an NTFS thing. I have seen that happen in W2K, but only once, and I never knew why. Consider reformatting and trying again. When this happened to me, it was a fully functional machine, and after I had changed some settings with the Group Policy Editor. ... JD Hurst

Thanks for your reply.

Would I need to reformat the whole 60gb hd or just the os partition (C:; 12 gb?)

Also, I am building the hd (slowly) and have neither put SP4 on, nor turned off all the services and other stuff that I don't need. With my FAT32 installation, this has all been done. Would this make any difference?

I think you just need to re-format the C: drive partition. I am not certain, because I have not done what you have done, so someone else may be able to offer a comment. ... JD Hurst

I'm running W2K on my T30 and my desktop machine.
Neither stay very long on the splash screen, maybe 5-10 seconds at most.

Then only time I've seen the splash screen stuck like that was some time ago I had a RAID card on my desktop machine. It used to take a long time at that point to sync the disks on occasions.

My standard partition config is,
C: System volume with W2K and program files
D: User data volume

To test out my "long-hand" recovery procedure for my desktop, over the weekend I happened to install W2K again, albeit in a virtual machine.
Procedure was as follows,

Clean W2K install using W2K setup to delete all existing partitions and then create just C:
Install the OS and then apply service pack 4.
After that use Disk Management to create the additional partitions.
Then apply W2K reach-ahead service (post SP4).
Install other products.
All went without a hitch so it should for you :)

For comparison, W2K splash screen timings ...
Desktop machine - 10 seconds
Thinkpad - 12 seconds

Haven't timed it but it is certainly considerably longer than 12 seconds. More like minutes.

My plan is to install SP4, switch a lot of the unecessary services from auto to manul and see what happens, In a worst case scenario, I will reformat C:
