under *nix, the name is in the textfile /etc/hostname: here's a simple script to change <oldname> to <newname>:
"sed 's/oldname/newname/' </etc/hostname >/etc/h
mv /etc/h /etc/hostname"
This could be a weekly cronjob. If you're stuck with MS, maybe more difficult:-)
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

I don't think Mecke or any other windows user find this very useful. Since Mecke talk about regedit and posted this under the Windows OS forum it's pretty obvious it's a windows question.

Mecke: I'm not sure what changes that is required to change the windows hostname, but i'm pretty sure there is more then one change in the registry required for a hostname change. I think the easiest way is to find som tool that can do this automatically and also change the SID (which is required if the PC is a member of a windows domain). Maybe i'm wrong, but isn't such a tool included with ghost?
I did a google search for "+windows +"computername" +change" and found some tools pretty easy, but not sure how well they work. Do you want a random hostname generated or is it ok to manully specify a hostname every time it's changed?

They most have the same name everytime, i use the serialnumber on the computer and a locationcode for the name.
It's is an educationroom they is used in, And we are RE-Ghost them every week to have a clean computer.

I'm trying to make it more time efficient to reinstall them.

If that is the case.

Just use PXE Boot and have them download the images on bootup.

Take ya a few weeks to do the work but works like a charm after that.

Then you just have to turn the computer on for a new image to reinstall itself.
