Which Vista free upgrade to on T60?

#1 Post by Tiger » Fri Nov 10, 2006 12:17 am

Been reading but cannot find the answer so sorry if answer posted elsewhere. If buy t60 195144u , which is vista capable , which version of Windows Vista does Lenovo offer the free upgrade too - home basic / home premium / business / or ultimate ? Everywhere it says free upgrade to windows vista but does not say which version and if can pay a premium to get a higher version. Only premium capable machines does one get a choice of Vista. Basic Vista does not include the Areo feature.
Note: If this is more appropriate in the Vista topic , please move it. Could not decide where to put it.

IIRC XP Home gets Home Basic, XP media center gets home premium, and XP Pro gets Business. There is no upgrade with any company to get ultimate. Also, note that it's not 100% free

I missed the cut-off (10/26) by ONE day and emailed Lenovo to ask them about delaying the sale one day to let me in on the Vista upgrade, but never heard back. Then I think I saw something that Microsoft was going to change the dates to encompass earlier purchases...have you heard anything about that? :?:

10/26 is the first date of eligibility, but if your computer doesn't have one of those Vista ready stickers on it, I don't think it's eligible.

Yeah, on the palmrest instead of an XP sticker you'd have a sticker that said "Designed for Windows XP" and below that "Windows Vista Capable"

If you missed the upgrade by one day, and really want the upgrade, just return the laptop and order a new one while you are under your 1st 30 days.

But is it worth that for Vista? A bloated piece OS that kills your battery life and uses too many resources? Plus, I think there is a fee associated with the "free" upgrade for those who have XP Home. Initially I read Lenovo was going to ask $35 for XP Home users to upgrade, though that then changed to Shipping and Handling, but who knows how much they'll ask for Shipping and Handling.

not worth it to me. I figure i will be buying the ultimate version anyway, which you cant buy the upgrade to anyway. Some people might think its worth returning machine if they wont give it to you since you missed by 1 day. Threaten to return it, maybe they will make an exception.

People with pro pay very little. I believe it was a $10 shipping and handling charge, might have been less, and the upgrade is to Business.

Remember -- Lenovo no longer offers an option to return a notebook in the first 30 days -- someone can link to the exact policy -- but the gist of it is that you can return an unopened notebook only ; if the notebook has been opened, it cannot be returned !

From Paragraph 3 of the acquisition agreement that I got this morning with my new T60:

3. Return Policy
For a new Product that is unopened and still in it [sic] sealed package, you may return it to Lenovo for any reason within 21 days of th4e date of invoice and obtain a refund or credit. Lenovo does not provide refunds or credits for portions.....Products returned may be subject to a restocking fee equal to 15% of the price paid....Products purchased through the Lenovo Employee Purchase Program are not eligible for return..."

My new T60 has a very noticeable dead pixel (at least one, haven't looked at the rest of the screen yet) so I should be able to return it. Plus I've ordered 20 laptops from them in the last year, so that should give me some leverage.

Don't know if it's the easiest or so, but for dead pixels (wich are black), just a fullscreen white thing would do I guesse... (could be fullscreen video, fullscreen powerpoint,...)
There are also stuck pixels: pixels which don't display the right color. I had a problem with it (one pixel was turning from black to white and back to black etc but not the color I "asked"). I was able to fix it using JScreenFix.

I cant tell you that, but I can tell you how to make it disappear...try hitting the trackpoint center scroll button and see if the pixel goes away. Its an evil software defect.
