XP 'hangs' at Welcome screen

#1 Post by kennlopez » Thu Nov 16, 2006 8:18 am

T42: My bootup seems to hang at the XP Welcome screen. I ran bootvis and found that the Logon+Service init takes almost 2 mins. How can I go into detail to figure out what's causing this?

Thanks!

Does it do the same when you boot it into Safe Mode?

The init processes should clear within a few seconds; if they don't, it usually means they are waiting for some resources, network, hardware, etc, to pop up and that isn't happening.

Does it do the same thing regardless of a live network connection or not? :)

Yes

That's my guess. Any idea how to check out what's happening? I did find a MS solution (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816873/en-us) but it didn't work for me.

I use a DSL connection so I have to 'dial up' each time I bootup. So I guess I don't have a live connection.

hello there just my 2 cents,

you can try,

in msconfig, check the /noguiboot, (to make the splash screen disappaer)

then check the /sos box, this will show the drivers being loaded.

is this even helpfull, I am just trying here?

thanks

If it's doing the same whilst booting in Safe mode, then it suggests a hardware failure.

I had the same thing happen on two computers in the past six months. In both cases, the hard drive was failing.

Yeah, that has been the case whenever I have seen an older system, particularly a laptop, hang on the Welcome screen. Happened three times to 2 HPs and a Compaq of mine.

I would see if the OP could check the SMART attributes as well. :)
