who was it that advised me not to install XP?

#1 Post by malachont » Wed Sep 01, 2004 8:42 am

My A31p came with windows 2000. Being "the other guy's grass is always greener" kind of fella, I wished it was XP.

now I installed XP, tentatively, on its own 2GB FAT32 partition in dual boot, and was surprised to find, even in a clean XP install with no apps yet, it seems to be slower than windows 2000 loaded with installations... for some reason...

I mean simple operations like browsing directories or doing a search of a file on the entire disk (60GB). Could it be that I am missing some turbocharged IDE or Video drivers that XP needs? it refused to install the fireGL ATI 7800 driver, saying it only works with win2k. but I ran both the IBM online update and MS update.

Im not removing win2k yet, anyways!

Don't forget the major security upgrades in XP SP2.

If you turn off all the glitz in XP, it looks and performs a whole lot like 2000. Differences seem to favor XP, such as better management of wifi.

The ability to enhance the readability of the 1600x1200 LCD using Cleartype is worth XP's price of admission alone.

Did you go to IBM's website to see if there are any configuration programs for a fresh XP install? I had to D/L and install XP "Supplemental Files" for my T22. Also had to run a program to add CState Flags in registry and also a new driver for the "IBMLCD". I think the supplemental files are installed under a program name of "wxpsd1a" or something like that.

I put XP on my A22m with 800mhz chip and 192ram. I can honestly say that it runs quite nicely. Not noticing a big difference from Win2k. I will although, leave win2k on my other thinkpad as I can't afford to lose anything on that system.
