Mass XP Update or bit-by-bit?

#1 Post by riski1 » Mon Nov 20, 2006 1:05 pm

WOW...guess I've never had this many updates at once

I'm in the process of reviving a T23 and just did a clean install of XP Pro w/ SP 2. I was really hit by shock when I saw the 64 Security Updates that are now needed to get it current. Guess time flies when your having fun...or monthly updates

My question, cause this is a first for thee, is do I select all and download/install or do them one by one? Never thought about an update strategy, but is there?

Got the week off, so any direction is OK by me :?
Almost any direction...

Select all, it takes a while depending on your connection speed but it's better to get it over with :)

I've got a cable modem with pretty decent download rates, I hope.

Personally, I would recommend using Autopatcher on a clean install of XP SP2. In addition to including all ciritical and recommended security fixes, it also includes a small number of other helpful XP config options/utilities.

You have to download the October 2006 version of Autopatcher (between 100-250MB) and then you install it like you would a program: you select which updates you want (the default install includes all critical security patches, but does not include Microsoft's recommended patches unless you check them off). Then it runs the whole set of updates all at once. After you are done, connect up to the standard Windows Update site to get anything that's been released in the last month that wasn't included in Autopatcher.

Clean and simple and fast and sweet.

...... and after you're all done installing those 64 updates, get yourself onto Automatic Update for Windows. I barely know when it is updating since it downloads daily what is available. Good luck

This is what I do:

1. I download all post-SP2 updates using a program called Windows Updates downloader, to a temp folder on my hard drive. Get it here:
http://wud.jcarle.com/

2. I use nLite, a fantastic little program that 1) enables SP and hotfix slipstreaming, 2) removes various options on a stock XP setup CD, 3) customizes certain options for an unattended installation. Get it here:
http://www.nliteos.com/

3. I make a post SP2 CD using these two, burn it, and install from it. Saves me a lot of time for multiple installations.

I use nLite also, and use RyanVM's Post SP2 update pack available here: http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/updatepack.html which has all the post SP2 updates in one bundle, and they install during the regular OS install. Believe me, you will save a TON of space on your HD by doing it this way.

Good luck!

Sorry for not getting back sooner; and, maybe sorry that I didn't wait longer

With word that my Turkey Day home game had the visiting team roster change from 17 to 31 players (or is that eaters) in the last few days, I took the ball and ran with the Updates. Was really in awe that when I choose the "do 'em all" button how easily Microsoft downloaded and installed all 64 updates without a glitch. The only required intervention was during the installation to IE 7.

But if I had waited a few days, look at all the excellent ideas that came while I was hunting for an extra turkey. I'm not sure they are as easy as the initial approach or within my skill level, but after digging around in the links provided, I sure am going to do some prep for a future install :D

Ya see, I'm having so much fun reviving this T23 for my oldest daughter in college that I think I should have one, and maybe my youngest in high school as well.

Thank you all so much and this will be saved for my future reference...short memory and all
