Networking prob.
I have a 23739FU with an IBM wireless card. I also have a Netgear wireless access point connected to a Netgear wired router.
I can connect wirelessly to the Internet but my T41 cannot wirelessly see my PC. I've configured and reconfigured both the router and WAP. No dice. I've checked everything I can think of and all checks out. What am I missing??

Is your router your dhcp server, or is your AP assigning the IP to your thinkpad (when on wireless)?
What is the IP address of your router, and what is the IP address you are getting assigned on wireless?
For example, a lot of routers have a default IP of 192.168.1.1. But the AP might be 192.168.2.1. So, if your wireless thinkpad is 192.168.2.xxx it wont be able to see your PC's on the 192.168.1 LAN.

no, that is not completly correct.
For example, I have a Linksys wireless router and a Belkin wireless router. I have the Linksys plugged into the internet, have dhcp enabled, and I give it an IP of 192.168.1.1.
I connect one of the linksys ports to the WAN port on the Belkin.
I set my Belkin to 192.168.2.1 and enable the dhcp server, and connect to it via wireless. It gives me an IP in the 192.168.2.xxx range and I can connect to the internet. But, I cant see my pc's that are on the Linksys 192.168.1.xxx network. Of course, if I set the Belkin to be only an AP, then the Linksys acts as the dhcp and I get an IP in the 192.168.1.xxx range.
The router and AP should be on the same network, otherwise I dont think it would technically be an Access Point (it would be a second router?). I just wanted to make sure that's how you have it configured.
Because, if you can configure your AP as a dhcp server, you could be on a different IP node(192.168.2 vs 192.168.1), like I had said.
The first thing I would check, is the IP address I get when I'm on wireless as opposed to the IP address when on ethernet.

The WAP is on the same node as the router. The router is assigning the IPs. I've also tried disabling the router's dhcp server and manually designating IPs for each computer and the WAP on my LAN. No diff.
I've checked the WinXP services and insured that they are all on their default settings. File sharing is enabled.
I use ZoneAlarm and am pretty sure its configured so as not to block access between the local machines (pretty sure in the sense that I haven't changed any settings from when I did have access).
I know there is an explanation and the problem is fixable; I just don't know where to look.

Can you be a little more descriptive there? What are you doing, and what isn't working?krosenstein wrote:I can connect wirelessly to the Internet but my T41 cannot wirelessly see my PC.
When you connect wirelessly, can you ping the IP address of the desktop? What about when connecting wired?

If it used to work wired, and now does not work wirelessly, and if you have checked (as you say) to ensure that all the computers are on the same subnet and workgroup, then it well may be a firewall issue. The firewall settings for the wireless NIC are separate from the firewall settings for the wired NIC, so check these carefully. And try disabling Zone Alarm to see if that changes anything. ... krosentein - did you get your T41 connected yet? I had a similar problem with my T41 yesterday, where all had been working fine up to then. I deleted the wireless profiles in Access Connections and reset the main one. All returned to normal. It appears that the connection parameters can go flaky - it's too early to say for sure and I will keep testing.

i had a situation late last week when, for some reason, i couldn't see my wireless router. Using netstumbler, it actually found two networks, and I know for a fact that my neighbours don't have wireless networks. I unplugged the router, waiting 10 sec, then plugged it back in. Worked fine after that and still works.

Actually, after posting the I-didn't-do-anything message, I remembered that I had done something. I read somewhere that using Ad-aware and Spybot will sometimes mess up the registry entries that configure Winsock. A program called Winsockfix (free) will reset, see google. You can also find listings of the settings to correct manually.
Anyway, since I use both AA and SB, I ran the fix.
