Windows Experience ratings on TP

#1 Post by mabbas » Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:10 pm

Hello,

I have RC2 on my system currently, going to upgrade to RTM as soon as I get my keys.

I was wondering what Windows Experience ratings people were seeing with Vista on ThinkPad products

I have a T60 Core Duo E6300 1.83 with Intel GMA 950 (945 Chipset), 1GB RAM, 60GB 5400 HD. The detail states that I have 1016MB of memory free, 251MB of video memory, 64 dedicated, 187 shared.

So my Windows Experience overall rating is 3.0 which is my 3D graphics and gaming vector. The other vectors such as CPU, memory, and HD are all above 4.5.
Other Win Experience ratings are welcome.

I tried RC1 briefly on my 17043DU X60s and got an overall rating of 2.5. The specs of this machine are:

L2400(1.66GHz), 768MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, IEEE 1394, 8c Li-Ion batt

I also tried Beta1 on my 2371-9EU X40 and got only 1.0 because of the graphics card! The specs were:

P M 1.2GHz LV, 1.5GB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, Intel Extreme, Intel PRO 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip, 4 cell Li-Ion battery

T60p
T2500
2GB RAM
100GB 7200rpm
FireGL v5200

Lowest score is 4.3, due to video. Everything else is 4.6 and higher.

scores

2007 93 U

base 4.2
cpu 4.8
ram (2gb) 4.9
graphics/aero 4.2 (lowest score in this computer)
gaming graphics/3d business 4.6
disk 5.0

don't really understand why graphics aero is only 4.2 when have 256mb ATI card?

T2600(2.16GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15in 1600x1200 LCD, 256MB ATI FireGL V5200, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

X1300 with 64MB VRAM

#5 Post by mabbas » Sat Dec 16, 2006 6:04 pm

Has anyone tested this system T60/R60 to see if it actually runs aero? MS says you need 64MB of VRAM, but I have hard grumbling that that is now barely enough and one should have 128MB minimum.

Perhaps you need 512MB to get a 5.0!

Windows Rating

#7 Post by Gart » Thu Dec 21, 2006 8:32 pm

My T60p gets an overall score of 4.0, while my 2 1/2 year old T41p gets a 3.4. Suffice it to say Vista runs great on both laptops, and because they're side by side I can test all the new networking functionality, meetings, screen sharing, etc.

It is odd though how things are rated. I think the video memory component is weighted higher than other stuff. I had a client who put Vista on a screaming-fast laptop, and it came out to a rating of 1.0. When we looked at it, it was because he had 32mb of video ram. You'd figure it would at least average out because his other numbers were 4.0 or above.

Only major complaint I have so far is that when things hang, they HANG. Ctl - Alt - Delete does NOTHING. You can't get out of it no matter how long you wait or what buttons you push.

The "overall score" always equals the lowest score, i.e. even if you had 4GB of RAM, 1TB of HDD etc., if your graphics card gets a score of 1, your overall score is still only 1.

Wow. My 2 year old desktop gets a 4.2 experience rating. I was hoping my couple month old ThinkPad would get a much higher score than that.

My T60p runs Aero just fine. According to MS, you only need an experience index of 3.0 to run Aero. Anything under that and it automatically reverts to standard desktop. Matter of fact, my T41p (with an index of 3.4) runs Aero just fine also.

Anyone know how these Experience scores are calculated? My desktop previously had a 2+ year old Radeon 9800 in it, and it was getting higher Experience scores than the brand new Radeon X1300 I just got.

The 9800's Graphics rating was 5.7 and the gaming graphics were 4.2. The X1300's graphics are 4.0 and the gaming graphics are 3.8.

You can get some more information about WinSAT (this is the Windows Experience Index Tool) on these sites:

T60, see spec's below:

Processor 3.9
Memory 4.5
Graphics 3.3 (Desktop)
Graphics 3.0 (Gaming)
Hard Disk 4.4

Aero runs fine on the GMA 950 integrated GPU. But Flip 3D does get slow when running at res. higher than 1024x768 on an external monitor. I'd seriously recommend 2GB of RAM if you plan on multi-tasking.
T60 1.83 Core Duo GMA 950 60GB 1GB 14.1" XGA Vista
Dual monitor with external LCD as main montior when in office/at home.

That sounds too low for 1.83 Core Duo. I think my desktop computer's 2.8GHz P4 processor also gets 3.9.

Yup funny I just ran the test again and my CPU score jumped to 4.7.

I'll post the secret to the 20% performance gain when I figured it out ... jj

X60s Here, and it seems I have a bit of a GPU bottleneck. First the specs:
Core Duo LV 1.66GHz
1.5GB DDR2
100GB 5400 RPM
Intel GMA950 128MB (I think 64MB is shared)

Ratings:
CPU: 4.6
Memory: 4.5
Graphics: 2.3
Gaming Graphics: 3.0
Hard Drive: 4.5

So, yea, I get a 2.3 even though I have noticed no lag whatsoever in using Vista.

T43 2668-F7G (2GHz Pentium M, Radeon X300, 1Gb RAM, 80Gb HDD) gives me a score of 2.0 due to the graphics card. Everything else is reasonable.
