T60p and Vista Ultimate - No Sound

Just got a brand new T60p and the first thing I did was wipe and reload it with the final MSDN Vista Ultimate version. (Never seen an install go so fast!)

From reading the forum I see the betas are having some of the same problems I am. My device manager lists these three problems:

Biometric Coprocessor (fingerprint reader)
Sierra Wireless MC5720 Modem (for Verizon)
Unknown device (love those kinds)

I actually don't care about the first two because I know by January 30th when the general release of Vista happens, Lenovo will probably have the drivers available. The problem I'm having is sound......I ain't got none.

It looks like all the drivers are loaded, but I plug my Harmon/Kardon speakers in, and nothing. I tried my advanced dock first (which is way cool), but no sound there, and no sound directly from the laptop either.

The thing that kind of confuses me is the sound icon. When I hover over it it shows "Digital Output Device SPDIF High Definition Audio Device". When I play a CD or a sound file, the graphical volume levels seem to go up and down like the computer "sees" the sound, but nothing gets out.

Do I need some special digital speakers or something? I guess I'm also wondering about the "Unknown Device". Windows can't find any drivers for this, whatever it is.

Sounds like your sound card is set to output a digital signal, the base T60 doesn't have that ability. You'll need to change the output to Speakers.

Control Panel (clasic view) | Sound | Configure Speakers as the default and not Digital Output Device (SPDIF)

In XP, you need the Windows XP update modules for the sound to work. You need the one for UAA Audio driver. It is included in the package on the driver site. Not sure how this works with Vista.

Don't remember if I had to install any driver or not.... But sound worked in beta 1.

Maybe it's just a matter of going to Windows Update after the install.

I went to the T60p Download page and just grabbed the Windows XP sound drivers. After ignoring all the warnings from Vista, and pop-up driver errors after the machine rebooted, I now have sound. And the driver errors seem to have self corrected because they no longer show up on reboot.

I'm so used to manually fixing driver errors, I'm not really sure I like Vista automatically fixing everything, but hey, I said the same thing when I upgraded my machine from Windows 3.11 to 95.
