Will T60 1953DAU run AERO with Intel GraphicsMedia Acce 950?

#1 Post by ibm111 » Mon Dec 18, 2006 5:29 am

I have 512MB RAM on this T60. When I called before ordering,
I was told Vista would run. Now I see that it needs dedicated
graphics card. I have Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.
So what do I do to ensure AERO from Vista will work , or
will it run if I upgrade my RAM to 1Gig ?

When is it recommended to upgrade to Vista (after bugs from
1st releases) and when is AERO needed ?

Thanks

Lenovo says that all T60s fully support Vista, regardless of the graphics option.

Further, when investigating a few weeks ago, I found a number of people running Aero with 950-based notebooks (though not specifically a T60).

You don't need Aero to run Vista successfully -- it is simply the latest user interface. The standard (XP-style) interface will give you all the same functionality, just not with the same visuals.

All that said, I would always recommend 1 GB with today's applications.

Yes, it will. There is a thread somewhere that compares running Vista w/ Aero on the 950 and the higher end video cards.

Personally, even though I know it can, I upgraded to the X1300 (64mb) video card with 1GB of RAM. It was only $50 more and you're guaranteed to not have any problems...with that said, I don't even know if I'll be upgrading to Vista for at least 3-6 months...I'm sure it'll be full of bugs at first...I'll let MS and Co. work it all out.
Peace,
Ryan

http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/ ... gma950.pdf
says it runs direct 9, pixar 2 etc , and can use 192MB of
video memory - I assume that is from system RAM.

Would AERO be very slow with my system - even if I have
1gig, 1.5Gig RAM - should I return the T60 just because of this ?
Please advise. Thanks

It would help to find this thread that compared gma950
with other graphics cards, for AERO.

Aero runs fine on my X60s (1.66 Duo, 1.5GB, GMA950), but it does use more cpu power and as such chew up battery life.

I installed Vista yesterday, and I've already got it back to the Windows Classic theme. I found Aero, and even the new theme, to be bloated and distracting. I think I'm going to see how Gentoo runs on this thing, and if that doesnt work out, I'll just install Windows 2000.

Speaking of Win2K, does anyone know when Microsoft will stop releasing updates for it?

I'd keep the Vista b/c it has a lot more to offer than the Aero graphics such as much better security and stability since it is built on the Server 2003 base.

At this point, according to Information Week, Microsoft is writing new software for XP and Vista only. So, for example, Office 2007 and Zune will not run on Windows 2000, according to the article. But then, 95 percent of what most people need is available in Office 2000.

I think the stories of Windows XP bloat are generally unfounded. XP runs as well, every bit as reliably, and as fast as Windows 2000 (although it needs more disk space). I just turf the eye candy and some of the other unneeded toys, and XP works great for me (3 years 24x7 non-stop on my IBM Desktop).

So when all the vendors come out with Vista upgrades (has not yet happened), I may switch to Vista. My first action with the Release Candidates was to turf Aero and the new visual features, so I don't need any of that stuff.

However, when all is said and done, if all I had was Windows 2000 and Office 2000, I would be a happy camper.

This site says Intel integrated card GMA950 should work
with aero.

http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_beta2.asp

Also talked with IBM-tech and they said it should be fine.
He said increasing system RAM from 512MB to 1gig or 1.5gig
though will increase performance.

especially with graphics card that use system memory for graphics processing, I would say 1 gig of RAM is a bare minimum for running vista.

After XP went haywire, I decided to re-install Vista and give it another shot (Yea, thats right, XP to Gentoo to Vista to XP to Vista all in about 3 weeks, gaah). 512MB *IS NOT* enough for any practical purposes. I'm using 667MB right now, running only firefox and a few small apps. You should be able to get it down to around 400-450MB idle, but 512 is not going to cut it. As for the graphics, Vista ranks my GMA950 at a 2.3, the bottleneck of the system according to this, but it still runs smoothly with aero and all.

memory for vista

#12 Post by johnp126 » Sat Dec 30, 2006 12:25 am

we have been purchasing all t60 and fwd machines (since april or first out) with 2gb ram. I have a 200793u and with vista it runs nice. with the 256mb video card and 1600x1200 its pretty stable. I do get occassional oddities like i can't click a icon to open etc, but i did install pca 12.0.2 (and it has some issues) but i could not wait until feb 07 or so for the first vista release. i kept all the std drivers from vista and update as lenovo comes out with new ones. i have been running since nov 20 or vista first release on msdn with office 2007.
