Vista on T42 with 32 MB ATI?
hi guys,
ive been reading for a while about the chance of OS Vista working on a T42 with 1,7 Dothan and a 32MB ATI and ive heard sometimes that it wont work.
Has anyone tried it on his T42 with the same Graphics card? id be really thankful guys for any info.

Which ATI is it? I believe that Vista supports only Radeon 9600 and above for full Aero effects. My current laptop (Radeon 9000/9200 64MB) couldn't handle it, but my new one (Radeon X1400 128MB) should be able to handle it fine.

hi guys.....
ok now ive decided to get rid of my T42 ATI 32MB, ill buy a T43 with X300 64MB instead.
ive read a list showing the graphics cards that supports Vista and X300 was one of them. My friend too has X300 and got Vista on it and it worked though i didnt see it.
so what do u say about the X300? is it newer than the 9600? will Aero work completely or just part of it?
any hints, tips ,infos?
thanks

The x300 is newer and should be about the same class as the 9600 series. I know that the x300 fully supports DirectX 9 and that is a major factor in the Vista decision. Also, as far as I know the regular ATI drivers for Vista support the x300 series as well. Although it won't be the best performance, it will definitely run Aero pretty well.

According to the Microsoft Update advisor, Ati Mobility Radeon X300 will NOT run Aero.kf_man wrote:The x300 is newer and should be about the same class as the 9600 series. However some users report that they have managed to have Aero working.
So not really sure about what will happen...

I'm a little surprised actually, I would have though that any of the ATI X-series could power Aero. I realize that the X300 is the lowest model, but it is a DirectX 9 card (The 9600 and 9800 were) and usually comes packaged with at least 64MB of RAM. Maybe there is such a step back from previous performance with this model that Microsoft rates it too low to run Aero effectively?

The following ATI site shows which ATI GPU's are supported under Vista. http://ati.amd.com/technology/WindowsVi ... ducts.html

GomJabbar, thanks for the very informative list. That's about what I thought would be supported. What they don't say either way is whether Aero should work on each one, but with the use of performance testing in Vista to make that determination, maybe they aren't 100% sure yet? The biggest problem with Vista is that you can't really tell what will be supported without running some sort of tool on the machine. Luckily mine is new enough that I don't have to worry about that!

It depends on the screen resolution. See this page.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)

Remember, if you have one of the newer bios updates for your T43, it enables ATI Hypermemory and thus makes it possible to run really high resolutions.
I'm running Vista on my T43 with the X300 and its tiny 64MB of on-board ram @ 1920 x 1200
(plus it uses Hypermemory).
With 1GB of system ram, it uses about 255MB of Shared System Ram for graphics.
With 2GB of system ram, it uses 767MB of Shared System Ram for graphics.
